Dougals boiler looks smaller diameter and lower down.

Talking of Little Giant, Murray, she has been modified, albeit subtly. She is what is known as a 'swinger' - piped but not fitted, for the use of air brakes. I don't think she has a compressor of any form fitted (Craig/Dave??), but there are reservoirs and a brake valve in the tender.
IMHO this is a slightly different kettle of fish...it dosn't have a major impact on her appearence, and it could be removed without too much difficulty. With Dougal we're looking at more permanant alterations.
What has to be taken into account is that, Dougal is at Evesham to provide a service and if Dougal's owners decide that modifications to the loco will make providing that service more efficient, then why shouldn't they do whatever they wish with their loco?

I've driven Dougal (at Evesham) both with and without the tender, and while she copes very well on the line, having such a small boiler and with the lines gradients, makes not priming a challenge. So I'm very much looking forward to getting my hands on the regulator when the new boiler is fitted

Question;
Who has made the new boiler and (I would imagine it's the same) who's fitted it?
And was it the same people that made and fitted the tender?

I've been assured by my family, that I will be able to visit Evesham on Sunday as a Fathers Day treat.....

Andrew,
I believe the boiler has been made by Terry Statham, the same person who made Count Louis and is now looking at Michaels for Rhyl. I would guess Jim and Helen fitted it at their own workshops away from the line (Its very uncommon for the boiler manufacturer to actually fit the boiler) where they overhaul the stock and store items not at the line.

The tender was manufactured by one of the volunteers at Evesham.

Thanks Craig,

The only reason that I thought it maybe the same builders and fitters is if the loco had gone to Exmoor for example.

But thanks very much for the info.
The understanding that Jim and Helen have a workshop away from the railway explains a great deal.
There doesn't seem to be enough room to swing a mouse in the sheds at Evesham.
Andrew.

I do like the way the new boiler sits on the loco, and the smokebox has a certain look of Katie and Sian to my eye :D Reports from the driver are that it steam well!

Correct, Tom.

In a parallel to Mountaineer, Dougal has been modified extensively throughout her life to both improve her technically and to suit the needs/wants of her owners and/or the railway she is operating on.

However, UNlike Mountaineer, both the tender and new boiler have been added at the same time (or within a short space of time), rather than the progressive nature of Maintaineer's modifications.

Dougal looks very nice, certainly a lot more 'butch' (if thats the right word) than before.

Cheers,

Dom
