From the UK Min Rlys Yahoo Group:

Quote:

As in previous years, the Knebworth Miniature Railway is having a special open evening for enthusiasts on Wednesday 24th June. The evening will include the running of ex-Wells & Walsingham 'Pilgrim' and newly restored ex-Paignton Zoo 'Jungle Express' (subject to availability) . As Knebworth Park will be closed to the general public at this time it will be necessary to be at the main entrance gate (off the A1(M) junction 7) between 19.00 and 19.30 to gain access to the park. For more information contact me here or off list at antony.everett@ googlemail. com or telephone the railways proprietor, Stuart Madgin, on 07972 585527. There will probably be a small admission charge. There should also be liquid refreshments and a raffle.

We will be going along - I fancy driving up after work to get some Meteor action (and to perhaps see Jungle Express after its restoration), plus a couple of other Bekonscot people will be going too.

See any of you there?

Photos from the event can be found here:

A trip using "Jungle Express" with all 14 or so coaches was run, then a all petrol/diesel locos coupled in a cavalcade, then 0-6-0T "Pilgrim" hauled trains around the circuit. It struggled at first so "Jungle Express" was used as a banker. Pilgrim then hauled trains til dusk. A coach trip was run up to the formation of the old 2ft gauge Knebworth & Wintergreen Railway. Very little remains of this lightly-laid line apart from some sleepers embedded in a path. We left about 9:30pm so more things may have happened afterwards...

Great shots as always Tim :) Does steam operate regularly at Knebworth? As I would love to try to go up there and make Pilgrim's acquaintance over the holiday - she really does look like an extremely characterful engine.

I seem to remember when I was up there just after Stuart Madgin had bought Pilgrim, Stuart said he could only really see Pilgrim being used occasionally. I think she may even only be used at the annual enthusiast bash but I'm not sure - I might be speaking to Stuart Madgin in the next few weeks so will find out the situation if I remember, unless of course someone comes up with a more definitive answer in the mean time!

Just found some more photos of the open evening - see http://bogcrusher.fotopic.net/c1717069.html. I've spotted at least one forum member!

Yep, Ron47 was there and you can see me (plus various Bekonscot miscreants) from this one onwards: http://bogcrusher.fotopic.net/c1717069.html

Little known fact: The drivers seat in Jungle Express used to belong to GAT!

You mean this seat:

Which we thought was from a tractor...

I believe that the enthusiasts evening event is only once a year; in June. The railway I assume is operating usually at weekends.

(This photo of GAT belongs to another forum member and was taken at Vanstones Garden Centre, next door to Knebworth. My apologies but I’ve forgotten who it was. Maybe someone will credit it properly. Otherwise I will remove it if required).

I think (!) that's my photo of Gat's cab - no problems with you using it though Kelvin as you've now got the remains of her!

With regards Pilgrim and her operation at Knebworth - I spoke to Stuart Madgin earlier today and he filled me in on the situation. Basically when they first got her at Knebworth they did try her on passenger trains, however due to the gradients there she has to be worked hard on a full train and has a tendency when doing so to throw sparks out of her chimney. Therefore, Pilgrim is not used on passenger trains for the general public and is really only used a few times a year away from the "great unwashed" as a bit of a "play thing". I'm sure if anyone visits and expresses an interest he will let you have a look at her though.

Thanks Charles, I've put a photo credit up now.

I also bought the old drive train out of Jungle Express. However, I sold it on last year and I'm now kicking myself as I could have used some of it for Thud Thud!!

That's a shame :( But thanks for the info.

I can vouch for the fact that it throws up sparks. And clag. We were utterly covered - to the extent that it really wasn't very pleasant!
