Indeed Craig, and in addition I'd hope for a full survey of everything that is left before anyone even takes a spanner to it. Really pleased to see it out, I last saw it in Hunt's Foundry 22 years ago and had no idea of its value then. Now I do, and it really deserves care and attention, as well as a lot of time.
I understand a full survey will be carried out shortly, with all bits, and their conditions catalogued, it is then intended in the short term to assemble some of the bits we have, to make her look abit more like a loco again, this should include assembling the cab, adding smokebox door etc etc, of course this will depend on the condition of the bits we have!

Meanwhile she is proving quite a popular exhibt, lots of questions being asked.... Hmmmm, now if every answer had cost £1, we might already have enough! :lol

I really hope they properly rename her Mighty Atom as it sounds so much better than having yet another Prince Of Wales
I agree Mighty Atom is a better name, but...if she were to carry it authentically, she would have to be returned to original condition, which would involve changes such as fitting curved splashers, returning the rear axle to the original inside-bearing arrangement (which would also be a backward step mechanically), and substitution the original coal-rail arrangement on the tender. Given how perfectly preserved she is, and that we already have one class ten in near enough original condition (Little Giant), and that it would be a better match with the rest of the Sutton collection, personally I would suggest that it would be better to keep her in her final form. But of course, as Craig rightly points out, he who pays the piper has the right to call the tune.

At any rate, it's wonderful to see her back in the public eye after so long, especially given that George the Fifth has been lost to us in recent years, and I have every confidence that the CCLR will give her the excellent restoration she deserves.

Met the engine today, now with chimney and smokebox door refitted and a whole jigsaw of parts alongside. Wonderful to see and I'll be back to look in more detail to take it all in!

I know where I can get an engine...any time I want

The day after tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life. So you've got a couple of days to do what you want.

We now offer Forum members the chance to comment on issues concerning the future of MIGHTY ATOM - see the attachment to this posting.

Responses should be sent in writing to CCLR's office as stated in the document.

Cheques made payable to CCLRSA would be equally welcome.

Keep smiling

A good piece of work Simon.

Surely it is up to those that have divi'd up to choose between them what they want after reading Anthony's and Stuart input.

The rest of us who havn't can't really comment.

Suggest to those who do want to vent their opinions, they send their cheques to Cleethorpes with their letters.

On many occasions, I have had people tell me what I should be doing with the engines I have owned in the past. This now extends to how we should be running NBR and I am sure others who run railways or own engines know exactly where I am coming from.

Well done to all.

In this instance I think that having a lot of stakeholders could work out to be a good thing.

Some forum members have already contributed by giving volunteer time, and there
will be many such opportunities ahead.

And we can always ignore suggestions from people we don't like, such as why not paint it blue with MRW Forum in the side.

Forgive me for commenting on the possible future of 'Mighty Atom' when I have not, as yet anyway, contributed any funds towards said future but reading the attachment I am drawn to the conclusion that the only way forward is to conserve as a static exhibit.

Why?
The attachment makes it clear that the existing boiler will have to be replaced and the Custodians have expressed their opinion that a replacement tender will be necessary if they are to sanction a return to operational condition .... that doesn't leave a lot of the original loco to tour with :) Instead of storing a large part of the original fabric out of sight (or in sight but out of context) conservation means you can proudly exhibit the whole in a condition that ensures its survival for future generation to admire.

Whatever decisions are made on the future of 'Mighty Atom' I'll try and send a contribution to ensure its success.

Nick

I must say, my views are much the same as Nick's.

And for expressing that opinion, I will also send a contribution :)

Last week a team small in number but high in quality was present carrying out fieldwork for Mighty Atom's conservation plan.

If any other forum members wish to send in their own written responses to my brief document, pinned above, please can they do so by the end of October.

Thanks very much

I wish I could afford to send some dosh... :(

An engine should run. That's when they come alive and both show their character and challenge a driver. My opinion is formed from nearly 40 years as an engineer and almost 30 years driving loco's (29.5 actually).

I really don't feel (and this is of course a very personal view) that any engine should just sit and be admired, they need to be worked!

Edit Sunday AM:
A sparse and possibly provocative post by me yesterday (note to self don't post when tired and stressed).

We all have opinions on Mighty Atoms' future which we all have a right to express, but isn't the question really who should have input to the process of care, keeping and possible restoration?

And further to that, how should people qualify? By amount of donation or voluntary work done? Share ownership? Those sort of things seem the most logical starting point and appear to have been addressed above.

Whilst I have an opinion it is only that, an opinion, no more. I do not seek to influence since I do not judge myself qualified so to do.

Having myself experienced what Dave Humphries refers to above (the you ought to do this or that statements - usually when you're struggling with a problem of some sort, poor steaming, losing vacuum, just plain wrestling a recalcitrant engine or a passenger's doing something daft and dangerous) I know how well meant opinions can actually come across as unhelpfull.
