Hi all - I notice from the Exbury website that on August 1st/2nd this year, Exbury Gardens are holding an "Audience With David Shepherd CBE" event, involving the opening of their new engine-shed extension. Cryptically, it quotes... "The Gardens Railway will be in full steam with visiting engines working alongside Exbury’s regular steam engines Rosemary, Naomi and Mariloo, and diesel Eddy." Could it be that they have a visiting 12.25" gauge loco, on the Exbury Line that weekend? Or is it merely referring to locos on the 5" line, that ajoins the engine shed? The case thickens.... http://www.exbury.co.uk/website/david_shepherd_cbe.aspx |

A suitably re-gauged Black Prince..... The article does say that the visiting engines will be working 'alongside' the regular fleet, which does seem to imply that the visitors will be 12.25" gauge? |

Well there is a 12¼ line which has supplied the locos and stock that has spare locos, and its not a million miles away...... |

I believe (but as usual could be completely wrong) that the sister locomotive to Mariloo will be visiting Exbury at some point in the future.... |

Exbury are expecting 3 visiting locos for the David Shepherd weekend on 1 & 2 August, 2 of them never seen in public before. No info on what they are or where they are coming from though, it seems to be a well guarded secret! Neil |

I think I've actually convinced my wife to go down to Exbury for this weekend.... Mind you, this is in some part because David Shepard will be there and she has an absolute fixation with elephants! The last time I meet David was at Didcot, he was to spend the day signing his paintings and prints while I drove 'Black Prince'. I fact he spent best part of the day on the footplate with us driving his own engine. This, he said, amused him greatly as he so rarely got the opportunity to drive the Prince? As a thank you, he gave a signed print to Jacqui and I, from 'David' and 'Black Prince'. It lives above our mantelpiece. ![]() David on the footplate of Black Prince at Didcot 09-08-98. Further gen.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9HVae62GdE ...according to the text box that appears at 00:35 in this video, over the weekend of Aug 1st/2nd the three resident locos will be assisted by "a Maryloo lookalike, Lorna Doone and another Lorna Doone lookalike". (Looks like your predictions proved correct, Charles/Alex...) If this is true... ....Six locomotives in steam - its game on! Any predictions on the Lorna Doone lookalike? |

I think we can almost assume that Lorna Doone and Mariloo's sister (which I think is christened Black Beauty - she looks magnificent anyway!) will be two of the visitors. If the third visitor is a "Lorna Doone lookalike" it could be Denzil or Dennis (which were/are both at Exmoor) or Ellie (with a private owner). As two of the locos have not been seen in public before, I'm guessing the line up will be Lorna Doone, Black Beauty and Ellie - Denzil and Dennis have both run in public before. I could be completely wrong though! |

It will be the sister engine to Lorna Doone which lives on a private railway in Devon. Its black lined out and very nice. The tender engine was going to be called Black Beauty but that mayhave changed. Its a slightly larger version of Mariloo with very a very clear colonial influence. Wish I could be there for the weekend as it should be well worth attending. Mike Hanson |

Might try to get down for the Sunday to see this - new car arrives on the Friday, we have the Bekonscot-sponsored 'London Marylebone - Stratford Upon Avon special' on Saturday. Like I need an excuse to drive to the coast... Many other forum members going down? |

Mike Hanson is quite right when he says the name of the new colonial style tender loco may have changed. 'Black Beauty' was very much an affectionate work-in-progress title and when the loco appears at Exbury she will be unnamed. She will be formally christened later by her owner, probably privately (always assuming HRH The Queen doesn't show up again!) Will |

And if 'Her Majesty' does attend the naming ceremony then I would think that Trevor could quite justifiably call the locos the 'QUEEN CLASS'? |
