Well folks its official Markeaton Lady now belongs to Jim & Helen Shackell, and Cromwell belongs to John Bull and his son also called John. Hopefully though Cromwell wont be coming back looking like this 'Cromwell' :lol . Hopefully it will come back looking similar to this
Horwich

While i think of it does anyone know the exact history of Cromwell?

Regards,
Michael

Footnote: It appears that the link to the photo of Cromwell at Markeaton is broken. I'm sure Colin has one that he may be able to link to (but only if you don't mind Colin that is). And for ZM32 you'll have to scroll through to find it although it should be obvious as its the green Ruston with Horwich on the side :lol

Cheers to whoever merged the topics :D ,
Michael

MOD EDIT - Links corrected. Craig

While i think of it did Cromwell start out as an LAT class or an LBT class? If it was the LAT then it would have looked like ZM32 'Horwich' at the Steeple Grange Light Railway. If anyone can confirm this or prove me wrong i would be interested to find out.

Cheers,
Michael

I will have to seek it out Michael, it appears to be in one of the galleries I removed from the site to save space...

I do however the first time I 'met' the loco at Markeaton Park, just after John had taken over and reopened the line. We had gone to see Markeaton Lady but she was in the shed along with Invicta - which for some reason i never photographed! I was curious as to Cromwell's origins at the time but the give-away was the 'Littlecote Steam Rally' plaque it had on the front!

I later also saw her at Cleethorpes putting in sterling work there. Not so sure I have a pic of it there though, for some obscure reason!

I remember driving it at Cleethorpes - a very useful loco it was too. The fact that it could be re-gauged to 15" was down to the way the Ruston gearbox wasn't used - these are too wide to permit reduction in gauge that small. As a side issue, these days I live in Horwich, there is a good picture of ZM32 in the public bar of the "Bowling Green" pub, as well as one of the cast 18" gauge points still to be found near the old stores on the loco works. If anyone is into narrow gauge archaeology, the 18" gauge Hudswell(?) i.c. loco that was used at Horwich - having previously been at Crewe - was said to have been driven off the end of the line out on the works tip at the end of it's life and presumably is still down there somewhere. Anybody got a metal detector and a shovel?
