I've had a fantastic day, just wished I could have stayed and played longer. Here's a few pics from a fantastic day. Waverly preformed excellently throughout the day. ![]() ![]() Waverley Preformed beautifully all day. ![]() ![]() Charles also preformed beautifully. Ferry Meadows Railway is based at Nene Park in Peterborough and this year is the trusts 21st birthday, to help celebrate we asked for a guest steam locomotive for the event, Adam Jeffery (Jeffo) put his hand up and offered to bring Waverley from their base at Rudyard Lake Steam Railway. We picked up Waverley along with Adam and Jake Tweedy another volunteer at RLSR on Wednesday 5th August, and arrived back at FMR about 6.00 in the evening, offloaded and put her to bed for the night alongside our steam outline Charles. Bright and early Thursday morning we set to getting Waverley ready for passengers, but first we had to weld new couplings to the end of our carriages to marry up to our guest, then it was on to the braking system, and to make them work we had to install a temporary air tank in the back carriage, this was charged up by our loco going up the line and used by Waverley on the way back down to the bottom station, after a couple of test runs it was found to work fine so we pressed her into service for four days, and at 10.45 on Thursday 6 August Adam pulled out of Gunwade Station with the first steam train to carry passengers for nine years in Ferry Meadows, in the four days that followed we carried 3000 passengers and Waverley was certainly the star of the show. On Saturday the park filled very early and we started running at 10.00 pulling full trains for most of the day and didn't finish until gone 7.00 by that time most of the crew were starving, so it was locos to bed and us off for a Chinese meal at our house, shower and bed by 10.30, Sunday followed about the same pattern starting at 10.00, the event was due to end at 4.00 but we still had cues waiting so we worked until 7.00 again, the hour after that was taken up by Jeffo giving members of the crew driving instruction on Waverley (lots of smiley faces), we had 12000 visitors in the park over Sat/Sun and between us we carried 2400 of them. We loaded Waverley up on Monday morning for the return trip to RLSR, sorry to see her go but with a promise from Adam it will be back next year, we can't wait. Waverley was the star attraction, with people taking hundreds of photos and it seamed almost as many questions, Adam Jeffery dealt with the questions about Waverley and I have to say that we where very impressed by his knowledge and his skills with the public, it is worth note here that Adam is 18 years old and Jake is 14 years old, but between them they looked after and drove their locomotive like a pair of seasoned professionals, that is not just my opinion by that of several other Steam train drivers who between them have years and years of service, I would be very pleased to have them both as volunteers at FMR, they stayed with us at our house for their visit and were very polite and curtiuse and very good company. Thank you to Adam and the rest of the Waverley group for allowing us to share you beautiful locomotive with our customers and staff. Thank you also to member of other railways who traveled to see us, sorry we didn't have the time to stand and talk as we normaly do, but we did come under pressure from the public to keep going, all in all a brilliant weekend. Well done to all concerned - looks like the event was quite a success!! ![]() One question, though - what were all the light engine movements for? Dom |

The reason for the light engine movements is, when you come out of our bottom station you are at the bottom of a steep incline and can't get any run at it, Waverley is a bit light on its feet and needed a push with 60 passengers on board, so we had our loco going up the line and Waverley bringing it back down to Gunwade station, that way most people got to ride behind both locos. |
