Great photos as always Colin - despite 3 of them being duplicated mis-captions! Thanks very much for sharing. I particularly liked the photo of Gwril with Russell - showed the size comparison between "half sized model" and full sized Min Gauge to advantage! Looking forward to the next batch! Mick |

Thanks Mick, post now corrected, I'll blame it on the fact that Firefox disables the auto copy feature on Photobucket... ![]() Colin |

Thanks for the comments As promised, a couple of comparison pictures. The 'old' pictures were taken in 1983 by my Dad, the 'new' last week. I had a feeling when I took the first it was a little familiar, however the second took me somewhat by suprise!![]() ![]() ![]() I think the coaching stock will have to wait until tomorrow.... I ought to point out that I was there that day.... just can't remember much except through those photos and an amusing tale that I remember even if my parents can't. Anyway, I digress....On to the Ellerton-era coaching stock. The coaching stock 'nerd' in me was on fine fom snapping away at the variations. I had previously thought it was all pretty straightforward, but on closer inspection it isn't! ![]() 106 - Balcony enclosed coach ![]() 115 - enclosed ![]() Side on view of 115 taken from a modeller's viewpoint (the less said about me pacing out the lengths at Ferry the better... )![]() 116 - enclosed in all-over blue ![]() 119 - semi open with observation ends ![]() This was either 123 or 125, in the older brown/white. Either way, it had me shouting "imposter" (see below) ![]() Severn Lamb 16 seater, Fairbourne style! ![]() 153 - Severn Lamb 16 seater, formerly wheelchair coach, note dropped frame on this side only ![]() Handbrake wheel on 153 So why were 123 and 125 imposters? Well I know for a fact that the originals were sold privately and went at first to Cleethorpes, then to the Bure Valley, where they are now 'Annie and Clarabel' ![]() The Fairbourne guide/stock book indicates that the three coach artic rake has been split to create new nos 123/5/6, replacing sold stock. The current Fairbourne stock lost does not include a 101 or 102, I believe that these are the two balcony coaches at Evesham Vale which sit on 15" gauge Fairbourne bogies. ![]() These date from the 1985 operation of the 'new' coaching stock in the last season of 15" operation, I believe these were sold straight on to Littlecote House on their 15" bogies so are not included as 12 1/4" stock at Fairbourne! There are also ex-Fairbourne Ellerton-era coaches at Markeaton Park and Windmill Farm, plus another at Evesham, but they can wait until another time. The ex Fairbourne coaches #123 & #125 arrived at the Bure Valley Railway without bogies. They now run on the "Winson" bogies that arrived under the two "Winson" Special Saloon coaches (#30 & #31), which were built in 1998. The "Winson" bogies were "fabricated" copies of the "cast" TMA bogies, but they did not ride as well as the original TMA units. Subsequently, additional TMA bogies were purchased for the two "Winson" Special Saloons, the four "Fabcon" Special Saloons (#32 to #35 in 2001/02) and the PWay maintenance vehicle "Monster" (2001) - that is 7 pairs of TMA bogies. The original 20 pairs of TMA bogies were built for the standard BVR bogie coaches (#1 to #20 built in 1989/90). The BVR “Special Saloons” can each carry 4 wheelchairs. The only difference between the first two (#30 & #31) and the later units is that originals had timber roofs and the last four had one-piece steel roofs. Best wishes, |
