At the BVR we are currently getting our 2009 leaflets together. On the 10th / 11th October 2009 the BVR is going to have a "Small Engines" event. This is so that some of the smaller engines that do not normally have a chance to get a good run can use the 9 miles of the BVR to advantage. By giving advanced notice, it is hoped that it will not clash with anybody else's 15" event. If there is likely to be a conflict, please let me now ASAP! Update 2/8/08: One of the reasons why the BVR has decided to have a "Small Engines" event is so that a special timetable can be organised for locos that have smaller wheels (without "thrashing" them!). If they are less powerfull than BVR locos., they will have smaller trains. If they are more powerful than BVR locos (TE wise), then subject to the owner's agreement we can give them longer trains. Today I received confirmation that the last loco on the "invite" list will be able to attend the BVR Gala on the 10th & 11th of October 2009, so here is a list of the visiting locos: • In the blue corner - "Lydia" from Perrygrove - a 2-6-2 tank loco completed by Alan Keef Ltd last year. • In the green corner - "St Egwin" from Evesham Vale Light Railway - A large "Exmoor" loco. • In the red corner - "Mountaineer" from the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, complete with its new cylinders. • In the dark corner - "ROD" from the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway - A new loco this year. Its last visit to the BVR was when it was still a kit of parts! In addition to the above, most of the BVR fleet should be in action, although the visiting locos will get preference. All of the BVR locos are currently available for traffic, ready for the BVR “Everything Goes” Bank Holiday weekend on the 2/3/4 May. For the October event all the usual caveats apply, because one never knows what may happen between now and then. In response to Phil's question, our only "small" steam loco, BVR #1 "Wroxham Broad", should be in service - providing she gets back from her visits to Kirklees and Cleethorpes in September and early October respectively! The timetable will be a special for the event, in order to take account of the smaller wheels of some of the visiting engines. It will be interesting to see how the visiting locos cope with the “not so flat” Norfolk countryside. Regards to all, |

Just a quick update to say that all of the anticipated visiting locomotives for the BVR Small Engines Gala are still on track to arrive, for the weekend of the 10th & 11th October next. In fact, one or two may arrive early in order to run some trials on the Bure Valley Railway! Watch this space. Best wishes, |

“Lydia” from the Perrygrove railway is due to arrive by Thursday 8th October for the Gala on the 10th & 11th of October. There will be quite a lot of clearance tests and more specialised loco test on the Friday before the Gala. For example, how will a one-off “Lydia” compare with “St Egwin” (a large Exmoor loco.) and the in-house BVR fleet? The Gala will also be the first real capacity trial for the CCLR “ROD”. In addition, Mr Shaw will be trying to push CCLR “Mountaineer” to its limits! Do not be afraid to come and ask questions. Best wishes, |

Just had a look at the timetable - well done for getting it up in advance, something a lot of lines could learn from! It looks like a good event. But I can't see mention of the ROD on the working timetable; does it not get any passenger turns? Also seems a shame to confine St Egwin to Brampton shuttles all day too; was this an owners decision? I was looking forward to flying along the line with it, Romney-style... Lydia's solo runs look fun though! |

I must admit i'm a little dissapointed to see that the 04 and Mountaineer are not going to have chance to do a full line journey (or even a shuttle in the case of the 04)... Not quite what i was expecting to be honest, but we shall see how the weekend pans out... I see also BVR #8 is missing from the timetable?.. John Edited by Johnt5293, 8 Oct 2009, 10:22 PM.

My comments on the above are: We are concerned about the fine wheels on the ROD. It has already been found that the wheels only cover half of the railheads and drop into the gaps around the noses of the points. Another issue is the water and coal capacity. All our water has to be softened so we cannot just use any old tap water down the line. However, I’m sure that the ROD will be “let out”, but we do not want it to go out on the mainline during the public services and cause a problem. Another issue to be resolved is how do we fit a CCLR driver and a BVR pilotman into the cab? ‘St Egwin’ has already confirmed that it can haul 5 heavy BVR coaches from Aylsham to Brampton well within the normal BVR timetable. Steve Bell, the owner, said after the trip “That is the hardest ‘St Egwin’ has ever worked”. At some stage, ‘St Egwin’ will do a full line run, but only with 4 coaches. The BVR coaches weigh about 2.7tonnes compared with somewhat lighter coaches on other railways. The Romney is also rather flatter than the BVR! Lydia has already pulled a test train from Aylsham to Wroxham and back. As regards “Mountaineer” haulage and water capacity are issues, which we need to address. BVR No. 8 is working loco, stored on the buffer stops at Aylsham, for photos and for use should anything else fail. At the last BVR Gala, there were timing issues, so this year we have taken precautions to ensure that the timetable is achieved. Whilst the public timetable may not show all of the locos doing the whole trip from Aylsham to Wroxham, there is also a “private” after hours time table, in order to thank all those who have helped with the Gala! Anyway, nine 15" gauge steam locos available for traffic cannot be bad. I hope the above explanation helps, and I look forward to seeing comments and photos after the event. At Aylsham, we are currently waiting for the CCLR ROD to get back from Coltishall (19:40 on Sat 10th October '09)! It got there, so we hope it can get back. |

Was lucky enough to get to drive St. Egwin on a coulpe of the Brampton shuttles yesterday, having driven St. Egwin at both Romney and Evesham, knew she would perform, but I was amazed at how she handled the heavy BVR coaches at full line speed. Also she successfully made a full trip of the line at the end of the day in the hands of her owner, Steve Bell |

Regarding the 04,we were gratefull for the chance to have a go on the mainline on Sat night and give it a good run which it did with no problems and not a bad turn of speed for an old goods engine. We would also like to thank all those involved. Ray & Roger. |

Hi Everybody, I just wanted to say thanks to all the nice people at the BVR for having the little group of us up there on the Sunday with St. Egwin. I can honestly say that I have never had as much fun on a steam engine as hammering through the tunnel under the Aylsham Bypass at 20mph with the regulator wide open Thanks also to the nice chap on Spitfire who gave me a footplate ride down to Wroxham, I enjoyed it enormously and it was hugely appreciated. ![]() For those who are interested, there are a few of my photos (didn't get chance to take many due to loco commitments) in my Flickr photostream which can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24731347@N07/ And a video of me driving St.Egwin flat out up the gradient with five on the back quite heavily loaded, taken by the gentleman that is Mr Tim Gray. ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KahVczcYo4 |
