The Friends of the Kirklees Light Railway are pleased to announce the theme of their 4th Annual Steam & Diesel Gala which will be held over the weekend of the 12th and 13th September 2009.

The theme this year is "Back on the Line Again" which aims to bring back and reunite former KLR resident locomotives or perhaps what the KLR locomotive fleet might have looked like! (Is it also the first time all the early BVR locos are back together again since the CCLR's 2nd Little Unusual Steam Gala in 1995?) the headlining cast are:-

SR&RL No.24 2-6-2 FLW 1990
Wroxham Broad 2-6-4T G&S/Winson
Sian 2-4-2 Guest 1963

The supporting line up are

BMR "Mountaineer" 0-4-0TT - a chance to test its new cylinders
KLR 2-6-2T Fox
KLR 0-6-4ST Badger
KLR 0-4-0+0-4-0T Hawk
KLR 0-4-0+0-4-0TG Owl
KLR 4wDH Jay

All locomotives are subject to availability. Thank you to our friends and colleagues at the Bure Valley, Cleethorpes Coast, Windmill Farm Railways and Sian Project Group for agreeing to allow their locomotives to come for a hurl up the hill.

The event will feature and intensive timetable with additional shuttle workings and a demonstration goods train for photographers. There will also be vintage vehicles and a model exhibition and no doubt the Duck Pond Miniature Railway will be in operation too. Further details of times and prices will be published nearer the time.

Well things are starting to happen, today adaptor couplings were taken out of storage and dusted off. Two new yoke plates were fabricated ready for Wroxham Broad and one of Tracey Joe's Romney buffers jumped out from underneath the radial drill in the workshop...could it be a coincidence or is it becoming energised like the Doctors hand?!

How the Kirklees Light Railway would top 2008's 'Battle of the Atlantics' was anyone's guess, but Ithink they have managed a close run with the 2009 theme of 'Back on the Line Again', bringing together locomotives that once had a home on the line, plus a return visit by 'Mountaineer' from Cleethorpes.

Here are some pictures taken on the Saturday:

A very happy Mr Shaw, lighting/smoke conditions at Skelmanthorpe were great!

Thanks to everyone at the KLR for a grand day out, and for the hospitality given to the MRMT Trustees and Advisers. I'll leave it to someone else to explain what happened later in the evening...

Great pictures as always Colin :) Funnily enough, I haven't seen Sian since she was actually based at Clayton West! If only I had more opportunities to go up North...

Hope to sort through my shots tonight! Got some nice ones, helped by the weather!

A fantastic event, well done to Stu and Steven for all the hard work. This is fast becoming the 15" gauge gala in the calander!

I think we may have beaten the record for the most forum members in one place, and also think someone has taken my crown for the most pollution. Photo evidence to follow but Chris's socks were mentioned...

The fun and games on Sat night just added to it.

Most enjoyable event as usual ... only marred by my video camera corrupting much of the film I took and by my almost unbelieveable failure to press the start button when the 17:00 'Shelley or Bust' departure erupted out of Clayton West :(

Gutted that we missed a lot of fun on Saturday night - what happened?

Massive thanks to the KLR gang (especially Stu) and all of the visiting teams for making it happen.

No 24 had a bit of a hissy fit and decided to runa hot bearing and stop on the way down. Now some would blame the driver and fireman combo but.....

Anyway, after a little while 24 was coaxed into the loop at cuckoos and sian heading the train back down. It was getting quite hairy for a while as the passengers needed re-filling (& emptying)

24 then rolled down at a slow pace with 3 of us on the footplate arriving back to a great applause from the newly refilled passengers.

We now have some incriminating evidence, the Huddersfield Examiner have carried a photo tonight showing Tom tweaking 24 with a BIG spanner, could it be it wasn't the crews fault after all?

In all seriousness I'd like to echo Alans sentiments and also thank everyone who came, took part and loaned us their locomotives. Its the people that make the events so good, so thank you to everyone who came and to those who were very late home on Saturday night!
