It was built in 1950 by Trevor Guest, and has worked at Dudley Zoo, Lowestoft and Rhyl, among other locations.

hate to be picky but it has not been to Rhyl it being 4 3/4 inches to narrow.
It may only be 15" but it is fun to play with

"LMS Black Five 4-6-0 passenger & express goods locomotive 5156 "Ayrshire Yeomanry". this loco was built in 1950 by Trevor Guest and ran in Lowestoft as "Sonia" for a number of years before being acquired in 1969 by Lionel Creed for his extensive railway in Malvern. In 1978 "5156" was bought by Mike Oliver who took her north to Scotland, initially at Locgilphead and then at Arbroath where she ran intermittently at the famous Kerr's miniature line until 1996 when she was acquired by Chris English. After an extensive overhaul and repaint at the British Engineerium in Brighton & Hove in non authentic LMS Crimson Lake (Black Five's were always black although four of the class were named, including one as 45156 "Ayrshire Yeomanry")"

According to "Miniature Railways Past & Present" by Anthony J Lambert it ran at Rhyl. Have to say I did wonder about it when I read it.

Without recourse to books as they're in Isobel's room, wasn't the Voryd Miniature Railway at Rhyl 10 1/4" gauge? Simon will I hope be able to clarify.

Thanks to all those who have posted, i had already had a check on the SDLR website. I was more interested on a technical side of things.

Peter A number of the stanier 5mt locos where painted green but this was very early on in The Changeover from the LMS to BR and i think it was done in ivatts tenure as CME
JORDAN ASHLEY LEEDS

Trains go into tunnels and come out but locos can go in sheds and never come out

Nope that was 11 1/4" gauge...and the loco from said railway I believe is in a museum in Scotland!

The Black 5 did indeed run in Lowestoft - first on the South Pier and then on a permanent line on the Promenade near the Royal Hotel.

See: http://www.francisfrith.com/lowestoft/photos/the-pier-miniature-railway-c1955_L105076/ for a shot on the South Pier.

I grew up in Suffolk and used to go to Lowestoft often, and always had several rides on the miniature railway, usually behind the Curwen. Round and round the putting green. Lovely little seaside miniature railway. I wonder what an engine like that will fetch?
