Film of it running at Lowestoft:-
http://www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/274
The clip starts at 4:50 and is longer than many miniature railway films (but still not very long!).
I remember all the trains I saw ran clockwise, not anti-clockwise as shown here.
Also this run seems faster than what I remember. The driver is actually leaning into the curve - I wonder if he was showing off for the camera.
I never saw the Guest running, it was always the Curwen when I was there. The Guest was either in the shed or parked on the turntable.
I didn't know anything about miniature railways in those days; one was the green engine (Curwen) and the other was the black engine to me. I am sure the Guest was black when I saw it. But it was over 40 years ago so can't be sure.
Funny how the routine becomes history within half a lifetime. Shows how important it is to take plenty of pictures, keep a note of dates etc., and say something in your will about what you want done with your pictures.

He looks as if he is going against the signal, ie the wrong way round the circuit.

Sorry, just got around to watching the video clip. Brilliant.
Did anyone else notice at 2-47, the electric boat operated like a dogem with an overhead mesh? The water must have been an electrolyte for the current to return, but what a truly bonkers idea!

ran in Lowestoft as "Sonia" for a number of years before being acquired in 1969 by Lionel Creed for his extensive railway in Malvern.

Does any one know anything about this railway?
Are there any articles or photographs?
It closed around 1978 from the information on Station Road steam site.

Are you referring to Lowestoft or Malvern?

Lionel Creed's railway in Malvern, I should have used a shorter quote.

The Heywood Society Journal No.24 (May 1989, page 6) has a detailed history of "Sonia".

Here is an extract, it states: "....but her [Sonia] fortunes revived in 1969 when she was bought by Mr Lionel Creed for his private 10.25" gauge railway in his extensive garden at Malvern Link, Worcestershire. He carried out, with professional help, major repairs and refurbishment which considerably enhanced both her performance and appearence. As part of the rebuild, she was "privatised", being repainted in LMS style, the livery being a bright flamingo red, lined out in yellow and the preffix "4" was dropped from her number. The nameplates "Sonia" had, however, disappeared. The class 5 shared her duties on the garden railway with an Ivatt Atlantic but I have no details of this latter engine. After a few steaming seasons, Mr Creed's health could no longer sustain the rigours of miniature railway operating and he reluctantly decided to dispose of the railway, which coincided with a move of house. Towards the end of 1978 I [Michael Oliver] purchased the locomotive, and in January 1979, during two days of atrocious weather, she was towed up to Scotland in a horse box".

Narrow Gauge News No. 66 (August 1970) records: "L H Creed, Link End House, Malvern Link, Worcs. Mr Creed has a railway in his garden consisting of an oval of 10.25" gauge track, part of which is dual 7.25" gauge, with a spur leading to a shed in the centre. The Black 5 reported at A J Glaze [in NGN 64] in fact is the ex Lowestoft loco buitl by Guest in 1950 and has been rebuilt". Another 10.25" gauge loco was acquired through Christies. It is "Sir A Montgomery" a GWR [sic] type 4-4-2. At the time of the visit [May 1970] it was stored at Ranford Garage, Barnards Green, on the A440, awaiting removal to Link End House. Details of any 7.25" gauge locos are not known.

Narrow Gauge News No.119 (June 1979) records: Mr Creed has recently offered a complete 10.25" guage railway for sale. The items offered are two open coaches, approx 1/4 mile of track and a 4-4-2 steam locomotive "Sir A Montgomery".

Hope all this is of interest. "Sir A Montgomery" started life at the Crown Hotel, Wychbold and is now "Ernest Henry Upton" at Eastleigh.

Peter S.
