On a visit to the National Railway museum at York this week, one of the museum staff told me that a new deltic locomotive has been ordered for the 7 1/4" demo track there.

Another source suggests that it is a Mardyke locomotive.

Is there any comfirmation of this and what power drive it is and when is it to arrive at york?

Will it be 55002?

Best wishes

Matt

Here she is this morning, ready for crew training. South Yard is closed for works until late July, so please don't come looking for the loco at the moment, the whole place is a building site and you won't get in, sorry!

Nick,
It's a standard Mardyke loco. Kubota Z482 engine driving an Eaton Model 11 pump to two bogie mounted Danfoss OMP50 hydraulic motors. The control is a Felsted, which is sold by cable tec in this country.

Antony, Is the loco going to be finished as D9002 'Kings Own Yorkshire Infantry'? I think some headcode numbers would finish the loco off nicley.......

Thanks mate, much appreciated!

Nick

edit: does this system "freewheel" or is it much like a hydrostat unit where neutral will stop the loco??

Nick,
No, it does not freewheel, bringing the control back slows the loco down, it's a proper variable swashplate pump. After all, it's just half an Eaton model 11 transmission. Gear pumps have more of a freewheeling action.

I'm currently looking at drive systems for my rebuild, currently have an Eaton unit running off a 13hp Honda petrol, but I'm after something with freewheeling capability... So i was tempted by possibly running 4 1hp Parkside motors (2 per bogey, bo-bo wheel arrangement)

Or possibly looking into some other hydraulic system that freewheels. Our railway has a lot of gradients up/downhill and would rather rely on vac brakes and dynamic braking...

We have a visiting loco which is fitted with 1 x 1hp motor and seems to pull 1/2 coaches fine so im hoping that 4 x 1hp motors should pull 4 with extra power to spare

4 HP should haul 4 Tonnes easily enough (based on 10 MPH) which equates to 8 x 8' Coaches (1 coach is normally about 1/2 Tonne). The little bosch motors are good little things but are high reving (4200 RPM) so need a layshaft, hard to fit. Brian now stocks some purpose designed 1HP motors which are arguebly better than the Bosch ones but rev at 3000RPM so a straight reduction is normally possible. You could also look at winch motors which are readily available or Etek pancake type high power ones.

Hydraulics wise you would be looking at an open loop system rather than the closed loop, using a pump and motors with a valve fitted with a bypass. As the valve is returned to neutral, the hydraulic circuits are left open to allow oil to flow rather than like the eaton and other hydrostatic options which close the hydraulic circuits off when the control is returned to neutral.

Gents, the new Mardyke Deltic, in two tone green livery, was in use on Sat14th August. She looks superb, but is yet un-named or numbered. The loco now runs round at each end of the journey. Cheers , Dave

Going slightly off topic for a second but in keeping with the 7.25" Deltic...
Saw one at my local club the other weekend dressed up as the original deltic... It certainly looked the part! Theres a picture at the bottom

The new Deltic at the NRM is now 55002 'Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry', as seen yesterday by several forum members:
