Well, I have bought myself a 5 inch gauge Achilles from my local engineering club, it is in need of putting back together. The loco was originally a club loco and ran very well but one member tampered with the boiler and it failed. With a brand new boiler it just wants a bit of love and it will be back up and running! Its in my favourite livery too! Not sure about the name though...

Is the Achilles similar to that of a Simplex? I've not heard of an Achilles before.

In my experience the Achilles is of similar power to a super simplex but steams better with less "warm up time" The boiler is to be tested shortly, fingers crossed!

Boiler has passed its hydraulic test, the back head has been plumbed in and painted black. Boiler will shortly be back in its frames. Next: steam test...

Then it will be sorting out the miriad of small problems that will probably be brought to light and touching the paint job up.

Congrats on a succesful Hydraulic Test :P Hopefully the Steam Test is as equally succesful. I look forward to seeing the end result.

Nearly ready for steaming now, just final tweaks to the steam pipe from the header in the smoke box and adjustments to the boiler support and everything can be re attached ready for steaming...
The asbestos cladding has gone to be replaced by denim (trendy...)

She passed, I drove her round the club track with a great big grin over my face. She is very powerful and will not be hurried. Quite sedate but I wouldn't expect anything less from a 45 year old loco.
Here is the only pic I got of the steam test which was of the blowdown...

A couple of problems to sort out namely drain cocks and the whistle valve which stuck open...

Hah, this certainly isn't an efficient loco! Having taken her to the Joys of Life railway lots of things need to be improved. Currently working on the timing, I will also be fitting two super heaters over summer.

Been working on my short 5 inch line. The carriage is based on a 15 inch gauge early open carriage. The design looked ok on paper but I wasn't sure it would work in real life, the carriage is, however, pleasing to my eye, what's your opinion.

The carriage has a tea shelf in the middle and can seat two people. The seats are well in from the bogies meaning a reduction in "see-saw"ing. The seats will have foam and leathorette added at a later date and the body work will be painted in maroon.
The bogies are from compass house and the chassis is fabricated from angle iron welded together.

Me and my sister testing out the carriage and, indeed, the tea shelf.

Hi,

Looks great! But one thing that caught my eye, is how low the footwell is to the track! What's the clearance underneath when you have two people sat in it?

How long has it taken you to make the coach up to now?

Regards
Callum

The carriage was started in August and was worked on every other fortnight as that is when I am at my dad's house. There is no springing in the bogies so it doesn't matter how many people sit in it, the bottom of the carriage is 1 inch above the rail head. More vehicles are planned in the near future.
