On Sunday at 3pm we ran a Santa train at Rudyard Lake with King Arthur, Excalibur, 10 coaches, 2 open wagons, Brake Van. There were 87 passengers and 5 staff aboard. I think this might be the heaviest train ever run on this gauge of track( especially as Rubber Duck was one of the drivers) Does anyone know of one to top this? I also wonder what the records are for the other gauges? Mike |

Hi Good thread !!! 87 is an impressive number and I wonder how the other gauges stack up ? I know that the East Herts have run some big 71/4 trains at times - and what about the massive load behind the 'Rivers' at Leyland a couple of years back, any one have an idea of the numbers ? Mind you didn't Dobwalls haul a lot too ? There's one to make us think ? Cheers, Ivan. |

We hauled (for the craic, really) a 27 carriage train around the Echills Wood once with Mount Kilimanjaro - I think we had 80 odd passengers on board. This may be a UK record, I have no idea, but on the other hand I think the record for the 7 1/4" gauge stands with Bob Whitfield's Shay, which hauled something in the region of 120 odd passengers in New Zealand before Bob bought it. |

A standard 12 car rake on the Moors carries 70-80 people. I'm sure I heard of some longer trains being hauled on several occasions! Longest 15" gauge will have to be the Romney trial of the diesels with 22 coaches on..... |

Craig, Have a look next time you're down at MVR; I've seen a photo of Offa pulling out of the main station with 240 beaver scouts on board, something like 20-odd vehicles and at least two guards. As the other driver of the Rudyard train Mike metioned in the original post, it certainly was fun bowling up the cutting, both engines going all guns blazing! ![]() Regards, Dom |

I know Stapleford park recently used to run fairly regular 18 coach trains with either the Berkshire or the Niagra. at least 6 passengers per coach. |

I'm not so sure about that, havn't some of the multiple headers been longer, I thought River Esk, Green Goddess and one other (may have been Northern Cheif) managed 27 coaches once, with a certain P Van Zeller thinking he was towing the whole lot with Esk at one point! |

I've just had a thought (run away...) How many people were on that Wells and Walsingham train a few years back that resulted in the guard sharing the cab with the driver? IIRC it was a coach party or two that, in addition to the other passengers, pushed the train beyond capacity... Dom |

The Bure Valley Railway's "ZB" #6 hauled a 22 coach train from Wroxham (up hill!) to Aylsham after the BVR Gala in October 2008. The limit of 22 was the maximum number of coaches available at the time, rather than the maximum number the loco could pull. I do not think that the exercise will be repeated again sometime soon, because of the difficulty of getting the train formation together at Wroxham and then apart on arrival at Aylsham, due to its length! Each coach of the coaches weighed about 3 tonnes, but the train did not carrying any passengers, except for a few BVR staff and friends. However, the train made good time and did the journey within the normal timetable allowance of 45 minutes. Best wishes, |

Talking of RHDR mega trains, apparently a load of 52 coaches was handled by one of the TMA diesels on test, presumably 4 rakes of 13 coaches! (See 'Locomotives of the RH&DR' by Crowhurst and Scarth, p.22) I bet that train was longer than many complete miniature railway running lines! I suspect the shunting involved with that may have been a bit of fun too... |

There are pictures of a rather large train (20 carriages atleast) with 3 engines, top and tailed with one in the middle. I have also heard that when 24 was complete Ellerton pulled all available carriages and the 4 other engines dead to the point with 24. Alex |
