The IME are holding a competition to build new 10.25 inch gauge locomotives to a set specification as a team exercise in planning , design, construction and development. There will be a competition held at Stapleford Park in due course.

We have been pleased to provide testing facilities for Interfleet based in Derby who are entering a new loco. Last Saturday the first test runs took place at Rudyard and eventually met with some success. More testing will no doubt take place.

I think its 1. a great idea and 2. pleasing they chose 10.25 inch gauge

I hope that there are other entries out there or we will have to dust off Sir Ernie or find a way to remote control an Exmoor Loco to give them a run for their money. Remote control is one of the specifications. Perhaps if we plate him in they wont notice Dom in Pendragon's cab!

Hi Mike
Whats the power for the locos? I.e, have they got to make a solar panel, eco friendly electric hybrid thing, or are they making entering anything like diesel hydraulics and steam?
Is ernie still about, thought she may have been scrapped for her wheels by now :)

Adam

There is no specific requirement in the challenge rules about the type of power but you have to be able remote control it, have speed limiters max 10km/hour be able to be towed at 15 kmph etc etc
If its of interest I'll dig out the rules and attach them

There are full details available on the IMechE website here.

Not sure how well it has been publicised as I had not heard of it before through my association with the IMechE - though it is only in the pilot stage prior to full launch in September.

Thanks for the link. I had only printed copies before.

Interfleet have been on with this for some time as they asked if they could come and test several months ago. Testing at Stapleford is not allowed under the rules.

We are always open to anyone who wants to come and try a loco of any sort provided we get reasonable notice.

The the only one we turned down was the person who rang up and wanted to come and run an untried loco on the next Saturday in August when we were busy running a two train service was and he would not accept any other date.

Results of the railway challenge can be seen here:

Some interesting contraptions built...

The winning locomotive from Interfleet Technology was subjected to extensive trials at RLSR in February/March.

Cheers,

Dom
