Hi I took my son William (and barky Schnauzer Sydney) down to Ruislip Lido yesterday afternoon, originally I had said I would take him to the Model Railway exhibition at Ally Pally (William not Sydney ), but we got the dates wrong.Having planned a day of railways it seemed a shame not to do something so I started searching timetables and running dates and was surprised at how many lines only start running from the 25th March. However I saw that the Ruislip Lido line was running and it has been too many years since I visited there last. I have to say that considering it was really a pre-season day I was amazed by the number of operating staff around and astonished at the whole professionalism of the line. The locomotive in use 'Bayhurst' was beautifully turned out and running as sweetly as anything, the 9 coach train was also perfectly turned out. The journey is much longer than I remember (perhaps because the line has grown a little since 1986 ) and the ride was fantastic. If you are in the area this is certainly a railway not to be missed and to those people running the line yesterday I would just like to say thank you very much for the warm and friendly welcome. Good luck for the season. Cheers, Ivan. |

Hi Ivan, As an RLR volunteer of many years (although alas, not often to be seen there these days, owing to being at university), I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. We have, indeed, come a long way since 1986! The railway traditionally runs all year round except for brief shutdown for maintenance in January/early February. Of course, that would not be possible without our volunteers and it's always nice to know that people appreciate our work. Murray |
