Returning from a weekend break on the Yorkshire coast via the "long way round" (aka the A64) we called in at Wolds Way Lavender to view and ride the recently extended railway. A lot has changed since we last visited in 2006, not least the change to an admission fee (plus train ride charge). As they have developed other attractions on the site I cannot really grumble at this, it is a reasonable cost for a 'half-day' attraction. Over the 2011/12 winter the railway has been re-routed and extended, over half of the original straight route has now gone and the new line winds its way around the site through a newly landscaped area, forming a balloon loop around a small pond. The standard of the work is very good, although I can see the operators having a constant battle to keep the trackbed free from lavender! In order to keep the industrial use of the railway during the harvest period, a short spur runs to the re-sited Lavender hopper, this leaves the main line at approximately the point that the new route leaves the old one. Enjoy the pictures! Details of the construction of the extension feature on the news pages of the website: http://www.woldswaylavender.co.uk/news/ |

On display in the station area is a Bagnall outline 0-4-0ST named 'Stan Johnson', the builder's plate is "J Rex and Sons, Pickering". Talking to the chap who drove the train/owns/runs the place, it was built in 1997 and has been in store at Eden Camp for 15 years and is on loan to Wolds Way. The boiler is currently out of certificate. He wasn't sure if he would use it much (if at all), however he went on to say "maybe on Sundays". Given it's appearance in some of their new publicity material, including a nice British Railways style poster image used on metal signs and a van sat by the A64, I suspect he was playing it down a little.... Previous reports have suggested that a new Bagnall was under construction to work here, so the situation is a little confused as to what the situation is with this. The level crossings on the new route are very neat and display good attention to detail. Colin |
