I've resisted posting this so far, but I can't hold out any longer ;)

'Shifting Sands' is the name of my O9 (7mm scale, i.e. O gauge, on 9mm gauge track) project to create a seaside miniature railway in a minimal space.

The aims of the project have altered over the last year or so, and certainly for the moment, the line is more 'minimum gauge' than miniature in outline.

At the time of writing, I am working on the scenic side of the layout, most of the basic work is done, although the sand dunes still need their marram grass!

The project website can be found at http://www.shiftingsands.fotopic.net and I know... it is due for an update!

All the best,

Colin

I've long been watching your website Colin and love your model of Flower Of The Forest, I am planning a similar loco in Gn15. Your layout looks excellent so far, much better than I can manage on the scenery front! :)

Thanks for the comments Simon, glad you like the site. I think several people are planning Gn15 FotF replicas!

The scenery is all very simple, it isn't really that difficult to do the grass the way I do using hanging basket liner, which is lightly laid over PVA glue and once dry pulled up to leave standing strands.

My best advice re: scenery is to have a go, build a small diorama or smaller tester piece to try out ideas, materials and techniques.

All the best,

Colin

Why thankyou! :D

The model certainly got a few admiring glances from staff and volunteers at Clayton West the other week. It has been under construction since early on this year, and despite a few setbacks (including having to completely rebuild it once a drawing came to light) has gone together well. However, although I like building prototype models I can only seem to turn out one a year (or is it I only have that much patience), and the list of locos I would like is growing!

All the best,

Colin

Yeah, heard from a few of the other chaps a model of Jay had appeared at the line a few weeks back - shame I wasn't there myself really!

Out of sheer interest, what scale are the layout and stock made to? Am I right in thinking its 7mm scale using 'N Gauge' track?

Cheers,

David

Correct! Known as O9 (or On9, or to some On15). The scale/gauge combination is almost spot on, closer in fact than 00 gauge model railways!

There are very few modellers building models of pleasure railways in this scale, a lot of effort is concentrated on industrial and estate style systems rather than true miniature lines.

Colin,
Reading your posts elsewhere i'm surprised we haven't seen a Severn Lamb Rio Grande winding through Shifting Sands yet. Would be a unique model in On9, yet familiar to most people.

Don't think I haven't tried Andrew! It is a case of trying to find a chassis that will both work and fit! The Farish 8F has the motor in the wrong place as does the Bachmann US 2-8-0. Both have too much valve gear too, I am adverse to too much tinkering with N gauge mechs, I destroyed my first Bachmann 2-6-2 that way

One possibility was a Kato 'shorty' mechanism in the tender, but it went like a cat off a hot tin roof and I couldn't tame it... I would have needed a loco chassis as well.

I am still investigating the possibilities though, a static model of the 2-6-0 version is a possibility in the future, that Bachmann chassis still exists (although I do have another far more cunning plan in mind for that  )

Thanks for the comments on Jay Peter, any chance you can make it to the Retford exhibition?

All the best,

Colin

Hi Colin,

I'd love to come to the Retford Show but at the time I am in Japan on the Bullet Train so am unable to come. Sorry but good luck with the exhibition!

At long last I have updated the site to reflect the latest developments.

The September Scrapbook shows developments during that month, which saw the layout become complete in terms of ground cover and buildings.

Almost There... is a set of photos taken yesterday, showing the layout as it now is, with details and figures etc in place.

There a few odd jobs still to do, not least tidying and painting the baseboard edges and getting things ready for Retford. Three weeks to go....

Colin,
These updates were well worth the long wait. At the risk of repeating earlier posts, i'm green with envy.
Attention to detail is truly incredible, though you've wisely stopped short of cluttering the scene. I love the ice-cream artwork, & the painted beach huts. Too many great features to list.
The dunes are a masterpiece, what more can i say.....
Add some smashed beer bottles & the rusting hulk of burnt out Vauxhall Corsa, & it could be my local beach!
Incredible quality throughout.
