Add some smashed beer bottles & the rusting hulk of burnt out Vauxhall Corsa, & it could be my local beach!

Well, that Astra came close to having a damaged windscreen, but that is a long story....

You have raised an interesting point though Andrew, where to stop? I decided against modelling some of the more undesireable qualities that can be found at the coast these days, so there are no kids with skateboards hanging about, no underage drinkers or litter blowing about the place. Whilst some could argue that I am distorting reality, I just like to feel that I am creating my own.... :D

Finally got to see Shifting Sands in the flesh at Retford today - brilliant! A good few layouts look better in photographs than real life. but this one is every bit as good as the pictures suggest. Would have said hello Colin but the relief driver (Mr Peake senior?) was on duty at the time. Still reminds me very much of one of my favourite spots on that bit of coast, Chapel Point (top end of Chapel St Leonards), with the cafe, dunes and pillbox. All it needs now is the sea air, tinged with chips, and the taste of strong tea...

Great stuff, what's next?!? An extension to the 'other end', maybe an intermediate passing loop to allow two train operation? Or just a lie down in a darkened room after the stress of meeting the exhibition deadline!

Hi Jim, sorry I missed you today, that was my dad operating the layout, I was probably chinwagging with the Cleethorpes crew ;) Glad you enjoyed the layout, and thanks for the compliments. There are no plans to extend the layout, just a few repairs, inprovements and additions before we take it out again (watch this space....)

My post exhibition therapy has actually taken the form of a little layout planning, but don't hold your breath!

All the best,

Colin

Colin,
I must have muddled up my weekends. My heads a shed lately what with the house move. I was certain that the Reford show was the last weekend in November, & therefore i've just missed it. Aaaaargh!

Hope you post some pics of what i missed.

My wife and I recently enjoyed a visit to the seaside to have a trip on the fantastic little line at somerthorpe. It most enjoyable, especially as it was a gala with everything running. The station was very neat and tidy, as was the workshop! Goodness knows how they can fit all the maintanence into the busy schedule of loco building. The rolling stock was very well turned out, not a single piece of litter in the coaches, and most of the trains were full. The strong tea provided by the cafe was most welcome in the cold november wind, don't know how the guy in just the swimming shorts did it!
Here are a couple of shots from behind the engine shed, looking at the big blue diesil, with the new 2-6-2 steam loco just in shot

Here is the works train, I think it may be off to do a bit of fine tuning to a slightly out of gauge point...

as you can see, the ticket booth is busy and so is the train!
Sorry about the photo quality, but the sea air was so bracing, I couldn't stop shaking!
All together a grand day out, and we are looking forward to the next gala, where maybe Smokey Joe from the SFR will be joining? ;)

On a more serious note, well done colin. The layout looked fantastic, the detail really must be seen in person to be appreciated.
Just really sorry my photos aren't as good as all yours. I must admit to never being able to take photos st exhibitions without a tripod, and then someone always seems to knock you at the most crucial point!
Thanks for taking the time to chat, will hopefully have another chance to see the layout soon.

Andrew, sorry you got muddled, your house move must have disrupted the thought processes somewhat!

David, it was good to catch up with you yesterday. Thanks for posting the photos, it isn't easy getting good shots in exhibition conditions, I tried myself but found the light very 'yellow'. Heres a few of the better ones, with a little retouching!

Visiting loco for the weekend - 'Robin Hood' - sold by the SMR to an owner in Scotland and back for the Gala :D

The layout looks terrific Colin, I'm so sorry I wasn't able to make it, but I had a busier weekend than I expected at first!

It really does look like a real line in photos so when I finally get to see Shifting Sands in person that will be quite an experience!

Thanks
Peter :)

Shifting Snad is a credit to minimum gauge and miniature modeling Colin. Beautiful. :D I especially like Robin Hood, inspired by a Clayton perhaps? <_<

Thanks Simon! It actually started as a stretched 'Cub' from Cleethorpes but ended up as a completely different beast! The colour scheme is a little Clayton like though!!

Some photos have appeared on the host club's website - taken when we were double heading at the end of the day :D

Sorry you couldn't make it Peter, no doubt you will get to see it one day....

I like the double header in the first picture, do both locos use kato chassis?

A belated answer to Simon's question: Yes!

Two new coaches have been commissioned over the winter, nos 14 and 15, based on an Exmoor design (the ones that remained there until recently).

Unfortunately the workshops forgot to tell the civil engineering department about the new stock, so some hasty work was required around the cafe/level crossing area to get the coaches to pass safely!

I can definitely see the Exmoor likeness Colin, you have captured it very well! Planning on visiting any model shows in the South perchance?
