With the exhibition appearance of Shifting Sands rapidly approaching I started to get gitters about the loco fleet, currently there are three 4w diesels, the steam tram, and a the bogie diesel held as 'reserve'.

I had bought a Bachmann US 2-6-2 some time ago as a basis for a Badger-like loco, I even got as far as a experimental 0-6-4 conversion of the chassis. However time wasn't on my side so I opted for the 'temporary' rebuild of the original loco, making alterations as required.

This is how it looked when bought (I'll admit this isn't the actual loco I bought, this is one I sold on earlier in the year!):
Posted Image

I have made the following modifications:

  • Longer cab to hide the motor;
  • New front pilot and proper wheel on front pony;
  • Rebuilt running plates;
  • New air pump and tank on tender (whitemetal castings);
  • New handrails;
  • Rebuilt tender with driver's seat and footwell;
  • Modified loco-tender coupling;
  • De-mobbed Preiser Luftwaffe ground man as driver;

The idea has been to create something that could have been built in the 1950s or 60s before the trend moved towards larger locos such as Northern Rock.

The loco now looks like this:

I had previously rebuilt a broken example of this model as a static loco, however that has had a few parts robbed from it to make this model.

definite improvement there Colin, very well done. I am currently superdetailing a MSS "0" Gauge loco, but as this is narrow gauge not miniature, I feel I would be going against Forum rules should I impart more information about it :blink:

Colin,
Having built my own O9 miniature mainline loco i can see the many subtle changes you've made to your 2-6-2. It certainly is more than a case of buying an N loco & sticking a driver in. Very well done on the conversion. I really like it. What does SMR stand for then?

Personally i prefer the miniature locos on Shifting Sands, instead of your Badger proposition. This will show it as a miniature railway & no mistake. NG outline locos could be misinterpreted as just another narrow gauge layout, though i'm certain the layout would never be overlooked due to its incredible quality. I'm looking forward to the next update to the site.

You state you have three 4W diesels. I can only count 2, the red "kato" one, & Jay. Care to enlighten us on number 3? Your blue bogie diesel deserves to be more than just reserve. Its a beauty!!

Oh so many questions!

SMR stands for Somerthorpe Miniature Railway, Somerthorpe being a town on the Lincolnshire coast somewhere between Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe :D If you look at the Shifting Sands website you can just make out the name of the town typexed out on the postcard in the header, a clue that has been there ages ;)

No 3 is the one time 'Yellow Peril', much rebuilt on a Kato chassis with a larger cab.

Now painted the same shade of blue as the blue bogie diesel.

I know the blue bogie diesel deserves a little more prominence, but operationally it needs a very different touch on the controls and I felt that it might be wise to leave it as reserve for now. It also looks a little odd with the Romney style coaches for some reason. It may spend the exhibition weekend on show outside the sheds!

The works manager is currently contemplating a steam outline loco on another Bachmann chassis, I'll leave him to decide on that one....

"SOMERWHERE" between Cleethorpes & Mablethorpe. :D
Sorry, bad joke. I see the clue now on the postcard.

Yet another nice diesel Colin. Don't know where you find the time. Recognise those knightwing sideframes i think.

A postscript....

It looks like 2007 will see another steam loco join the SMR fleet. Ever since the volunteers took over the line one has been building a new steam loco in his own workshop, it has now been transfered to the Shifting Sands workshop to be completed. Fancy a sneak preview? I thought so!

This is based on a similar chassis to the American tender loco, except that I have had to build my own leading and trailing trucks as it was the 0-6-0 version :rolleyes:

The overall effect (and size) is a mix of Fox, Badger, Bonnie Dundee and a touch of Exmoor!

Stay tunes for further updates....

Wow nice Colin! I can see you've spent a lot of time on that. Fox is probably my favourite KLR engine and you've done a grand job. What colour are you painting it? A green like Lady Augusta at HLR might be good :)

Thanks

Funnily enough Peter I was thinking of dark green, I might even be brave enough to try lining it out! Long way to go before painting though, I'm off to add some rivet and bolt heads right now....

Nah, Colin, go for the modern all-welded look! Quicker to complete and less straining on the eyes.

(Rivet counter) "That engine has no rivets on it - it's wrong!"
(You) "It's freelance and of entirely welded construction." :D
(Rivet counter) "Oh, then where's the weld runs?"
(You) "On the inside; neater for the aesthetics." :P

As you can guess I hate rivet-counters. Partly why I'm into 16mm - no-one cares. :D

Bit late now, had a rivetting day:

Air compressor OK - you can't really get away without one nowadays.

However, maybe she has replacement (welded) tanks then!!!! :D Never give rivet-counters the satisfaction. <_<

Either way she looks a treat - wouldn't mind being seen at the controls of a loco looking that good - and she isn't even in primer yet!! :lol:

If there's anything it is that the dome needs to be slightly shorter, looks slightly too high at moment with safeties on top (only by a little bit), but that's only a personal thing... ... :rolleyes: (not being a rivet counter of course)... ... :rolleyes:

You-re doing a grand job Colin.
I know you've spoken about a green paint job, but i can see it in something more exotic, like Kirklees Fox in Red with black buffers, or a burgundy scheme. Would look very colonial with a lamp on the front, much like Leek & Manifold.

Do i spy Dapol pug buffers recycled as tank fillers?

Almost, Airfix/Dapol 16t mineral wagon buffer heads from the depths of the spares box, sat on discs of 20 thou plasticard punched using my wifes punch. Just don't tell her that... :rolleyes:

Might consider burgundy or maroon, just had a bad experience with that colour in the past...

Is it just me or does the Whistle look a bit oversized? I'm probably just being picky.

Looks like we will have to have a livery battle. Maybe we could do it by poll on MRW? Though I don't think Colin would like that :lol:
