I spy with my little eye...a stretch of 7 1/4" track on the L&B in North Devon on Saturday, operating with the gala. Operating with a vertical boiler "logging" loco and a Roanoke diesel as back up. 'Fraid no photos though as was concentrating on the 2ft! Not sure if it's a permanent line but is certainly ballasted...

Very interesting Charles. You should have took a pic :P I saw in a recnt Narrow Gauge News (can't remember which) a picture of a Vertical Boilder at Amberley I think so maybe it's that one? :)

The Lynton website dosen't have details up. Maybe it was for their Steam Gala?

There is a permanent private stretch of 7 1/4" gauge on the L&B trackbed somewhere. I have seen a picture (NGN?) and remember it from the BBC production 'Little Train to Lynton' many years ago.

There was an 'almost' Manning Wardle there at one point.

I'm not quite sure whether Charles means with the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway or on the trackbed.

There ie definetly or used to be a 7 1/4 inch gauge line on the track bed as Colin says. It was featured in Garden Rail and I have a copy of it. There was a Taw replica and a diesel. A very impressive line.

It was advertised as part of their steam gala, tho looks as if it could be a permanent line but only running for special events.

I do know about the other line on the L&B, Dave Moore's at Bratton Fleming. Was still there 2 years back tho if it still is...!

The Roanoke must have come from Roanoke's works in Bratton Flemming, as that is near Woody Bay. The 7 1/4 Vertical loco is based on a loco that worked on a quayside, I know the person who built and owns this loco, I have also driven it! Great fun, he also owns a 5" Quarry Hunslet that was built by Terry Aspin, anyone who reads Model Engineer will know who that is ;)

Looked like an older Roanoke to me, thoughts are from a private railway somewhere - certainly was lettered out for some private line!

I have no details on the line., although I have been invited to go and operate down there - maybe I'll give it a go!

I am not 100% sure but there may be some pictures of the 7 1/4" line in the following book.

P Gower, B Gray & K Vingoe: The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway — Yesterday and Today published by The Oakwood Press. First edition 1999. ISBN 0-85361-537-3

I shall have to dig out my copy and have a look, it's still in a box following a move of house.

The line is privately owned and the Tinkerbell that David Moore owned which used to be Bratton and was featured on the BBC programme can be seen for sale on

Hi there,

I think I can possibly clear this one up.

The miniature line at Woody Bay station was somewhat thrown down by Nik Barrie of the railway for the Gala. It will, in due course, become a permanent line, but most certainly is not at the moment. I know this, because those two locomotives running at the Gala are both mine :)

The vertical boilered logging loco is a Clishay, was bought from Station Road Steam last year, and rebuilt just in time for the Gala (but not cosmetically restored) at the Bedford Model Engineering Society, where it, and the Roanoke (called Ynys Tywyn) both reside usually. Unfortunately during the running on the sunday the engine unit in the clishay, which runs at an extortionate speed, rattled something critical loose within itself, and self destructed (non terminally, thank god) but the loco is still laid aside, waiting on me having time to rebuild it again.

The Roanoke is presently in grey undercoat, and isn't lettered at all, but does have "MYMR No. 1" plates on it - this standing for Minffordd Yard Miniature Railway, which is really where I bought the loco for, for use on Ffestiniog Railway galas (it ran there during the 2005 gala). It is indeed one of the older locos, and was the 5th loco Roanoke ever made, according to the guys at Bratton Fleming, in 1998.

I had some pictures, taken by my co driver for the weekend, of the Gala, but unfortunately I deleted the email they were in without saving them (idiot I). I will try and recover them again, and send them on.

Yours,

Thanks for clearing that up John, I know which logging loco you mean, I browse Station Road Steam regularly. I hope it's in a much better condition now ;)

Hi All,

Just in case anyone was wondering - I've finally found a couple of pictures of my Cli Shay - the clearest is here:

http://mth.fotopic.net/p34015096.html

Unfortunately, still no sign of the piccies at Lynton, and the Roanoke seems to be camera shy :) (although the same website has pictures of it in its last coat of paint at http://mth.fotopic.net/p17352341.html)

Its just a pity I'm so bloody awful at painting locos, I've had the Roanoke in Blue, Maroon and (undercoat) grey in the last 3 years, cos I never make a good enough job of it (hence the undercoat, I'm doing it properly this time - its just I can never find time whilst the weather is conducive to painting)

Cheers,

John

Hi John,

Welcome to the MRW Forums! Thanks for the information and the picture links. What colour do you think you will paint the Roanoke?

It would be good to see a permanent miniature railway there, rather like the new line at the Welsh Highland Railway.

Thanks
Peter

Funny you should mention the WHR(P) mini railway - I've helped Bob Washington out on that as well! (The Pont Hoppe bridge is Bob's construction, but a Savage installation)

I think, given the loco has actually had some fairly positive reaction whilst running in grey, it will probably go the same livery as Bob's Castell Deudraeth (I am a long running FR man, and it is an FR livery) - i.e. FR style Dutch livery (grey with a yellow band, yellow front, wasp stripe buffers - I'll probably draw the line at yellow rods but they will go to having black inserts instead of the current red ones)

Chances are the locos will follow me to Wales whenever I go, although the MYMR is currently out of commission again, where someone backed a coal lorry over it and mangled the track, and so they will probably end up at Gelerts Farm for the duration of my visits.

First priority though is fixing the Clishay, rather than painting the Roanoke, which will probably happen in the summer when the weather is a bit better (assuming the Bedford boys don't need it all season again)

Cheers,

John
