Andrew Blackwell has sent me these images for inclusion on the forum: In Andrew's own words "It runs on Farish prairie chassis, modified with Minitrix front bogie, & cut down farish A4 trailing bogie. Cab sides are Dapol Cuty of Truro, cut down & used inside out (you can see the filled ejector pin marks. Cab front is from scratch. Boiler is obviously styrene tube, with overlays for bands, though needs more bits around its base to hide mechanism. Smokebox is straight from Chivers 009 kit, but chimney & dome were section & turned down from 009 NG items. Safety valve cover was turned down from a 009 sandbox. Its hollow & features the valves within it. Larger cylinder covers where fitted just after photos taken. Obviously lots more to do. Driver in pics is looking proud already though!" He does look proud, and so he should! Andrews previous creation was this 2-8-2, inspired by the R&ER locos but now with a little touch of Fairbourne.... Andrew will no doubt be able to answer any queries that anyone has about both these wonderful locos. Yet again the workshop manager at Shifting Sands is green with envy, his general manager is known to be a bit tight in the spending department Colin

Farmer Ted down at Strawberry Fen Farm is pretty green with envy too and his line isn't even 15" gauge. Wonderful modelling Andrew. I'm inspired every time I see pictures of your work. Ian

Andrew obviously has skills that we all envy (myself included!). Both the locos pictured above have various parts that remind me of 15" locos, cab mainly R&ER locos, boiler and smokebox "Yvette" at CCLR... But I bet the other members here have different ideas Once again Andrew, you have done yourself proud. Should you ever go into the business of selling your models, I'll be your best customer!

Being a relative newcomer to miniature railways i seem to ask more questions, than give answers, so this is my way of giving a bit of input to the hobby. Thanks for hosting those photos Colin, & many thanks to all for the positive comments. I tend to start with an initial design but these tend to evolve as i go along, & i like to feature my favourite aspects of real 15" locos, such as westinghouse pumps, bogie tenders, cowcatchers etc., using what i have to hand. Open to advice on how to hide the bloomin motor on the new loco though....... MTA, if you like my scratchbuilt locos, you should look at www.2mm.org.uk Look in the gallery and remember that these are N scale, so a little smaller than mine. Jamjar glasses & tweezers for fingers must be standard issue upon membership. Andrew

The 4-6-2 looks like a souped up Bassette Lowke gigantic, great stuff, both loco's have real character, two expertley built locos. I can't remeber if i've already asked, do you have an 09 layout?

Nothing more than a 4' x 4' sheet of styrene with a skewed oval & siding on. However a pending house move means i will have more space available, so something larger may be on the cards, but its a long way off. Its a long shot, but i've thought of putting Colin Peakes Shifting Sands on my christmas wish list. I've been a good boy this year Santa...... Jim, Following a colleagues suggestion, who does wargames figures, recently i have tried using drybrushing, & wash techniques, & i find the result pleasing when viewed at arms length or on the track. Not so great on cruel close ups, but for my eyes, it looks OK. I currently only hand paint, using a mix of enamels & acrylics, but would like to dry airbrushing in future. I'm still finding my feet really as far as painting is concerned. Its my weakest area. I've still got Colins old O9 small diesels here in primer. I daren't start painting incase i spoil them. all the regards Andrew

I've been considering a deep blue, with brasswork etc similar to postcards of Sans Pareil & Collosus in Ratty Album 1. Alternatively a brownish scheme. Something wth a late 19th / early 20th century flavour. Early scottish railway paint schemes look appealling. Please feel free to make your own suggestions. Andrew

I think you can pull off a strong colour like that without lining, with the brown it might look a bit odd if you don't line it out, not a job for the feint at heart!! Colin

Guard Posts: 143 Group: Member Member #31 Joined: August 25, 2006	Good ideas MTA & Simon, Improved engine green sounds good, but i do visualise the blue as being very effective. Might try colouring my photos in to test ideas. I need to avoid lining out the loco, to protect my eyeseight & sanity. Simon, my future layout is more likely to be a "Fairbourne & RER but not" theme, based on a once popular coastal resort near my home called Crimdon Dene. It briefly had a 15" gauge railway it would seem, but no trace now. Steep wooded valley opens out onto sand dunes & sandy beach. I could probably incorporate some of the nicer RER details within the wooded section. I like Irton road station, & Fisherground, & muncaster mill with the raised siding on the platform. Andrew
