I'm Anthony Coulls, I have been into miniature railways all my life, first loco I drove as at Echills Wood, first steam loco at the same place and mad fool that I am, I studied Miniature Railways at postgraduate level.

Currently I work for the National Railway Museum, based in Shildon, Co. Durham, but please don't ask me anything about work - in this forum, I'd just like to enjoy my passion for miniature railways from Romuli to Severn-Lamb!

Thanks Peter for setting this up, it's really interesting.

Welcome to the forum Anthony.

I'm fascinated by the fact you studied miniature railways at a postgraduate level, if only more railway enthusiasts were as far sighted to regard miniature lines as worthy of study!

Welcome to the forums Anthony! Thanks for the compliment, that's all the site intends to do, let people share interest and the main site give more people knowledge and understanding, but mainly bringing Miniature Railways back more!

Miniature Railways at School? Sounds Interesting! :D

After my first degree, I studied Industrial Archaeology at Ironbridge as a Masters Course from Birmingham University, had to do 4 modular essays and a thesis. The thesis was on the industrial archaeology of the miniature railway. Great fun!

The thesis was slimmed down and published in the Association for Industrial Archaeology Journal in summer 2003 as "The Ephemeral Archaeology of the Miniature Railway" which I can photocopy for members if they'll send me a couple of stamps.

So go on Ian, what do you do?

Hello Anthony,
Great to see someone else here from the north east. I'm from Peterlee, so not far from you, & i often visit GT Tool & Gauge on the industrial estate right next door to you in Shildon. Wonder if i spot you at this saturday? I'll be there for the 2mm exhibition with my kids in tow.

All the best
Andrew

So go on Ian, what do you do?

What do I do?
You don't really want to know do you?
I work in health insurance in the U S and A.
Which is only really of interest to people here in the states.
Its only really of any interest to me when I get to deal with claims for unusual accidents. Like the woman who cracked her head open on the kitchen sink falling out of the bath tub...
I'd be interested to read the article Anthony. I'll have to work on a way to get it sent to me over here.

I spy in my issue of 'Old Glory', someone whose name is Anthony Coulls poking his head through a somkebox

I thought I recognised your name from somewhere, also in the Steam Railway magazine ;)
