The bods in the workshop at Shifting Sands are looking towards the future with plans for a more powerful steam loco than the one they currently have. Encouraged by Andrew Blackwell's locos I have been playing around with a cardboard mock-up of a possible design based on the Avalon Line 0-6-0 chassis:

Trials have shown that with my indended boiler material (plastic fax roll tube), I can significantly reduce the gap above the running plate and that the location of the motor will almost completely be hidden, the air tanks doing most of the work.

The cab on the mock-up is distinctly Trevor Guest in appearance, I don't think that style will be carried through if I build it, the end result will be 100% Somerthorpe Miniature Railway!

Comments, as ever, are welcome!

Looks OK Colin;
But something just doesn't "feel" right I think maybe it needs to be an 0-6-2 or perhaps even a 2-6-2 (just to complicte things) ;)

I think Ian's right, a set of trailing wheels at the back will fill the empty void, but when painted, it might not be so noticeable :huh:

Hi Ian,

I know what you are saying, but my expertise with trailing/leading trucks is limited and the Avalon chassis isn't really designed to accept them easily. To be honest this really is just a mock-up at the moment to test out if the idea worked, as I previously thought it wouldn't be possible to not have side tanks on this chassis. Also, a 2-6-2 with tender might turn out too big for Shifting Sands...

There is another (ambitious) plan to try for this chassis first... watch this space!

Or I could just be trying to flush that tank engine kit out of Mr Bennett ;) ;)

Thanks for the insight on the Avalon Chassis there Colin;
That was my first thought for my model of Perseus when I get started. I was thinking it might be a doddle to chop off the rear, lengthen it and drop a trailing axle in there. I could be wrong then <_< and as I have as much experience as you in that area...

Don't get me wrong Ian, it probably is possible to do exactly as you describe, but whether or not I can bring myself to do it is another matter!! I may have another look at this in the future, but at the moment I'm doubting my technical ability on this front!

Incidentally, I almost knocked up a taller cab and chimney to see how a Gnine version would look :D

My ambitious plan looks like it won't work as the wheelbase is too short, I was considering Wroxham Broad.... but that would have needed a bogie at the back (which might actually be easier than a trailing truck).

I could of course always build a 0-6-0 steam outline loco ;)

Colin,
I like it as it is!
I love the Guest style cab, & where did that dome come from? Definitely fits the style. Because you've give it a more minimum gauge feel, the lack of leading & trailing trucks looks OK.

If i had it, i think it could develop into a merging of Sian / Katie / Nothern Rock.
Longer front running plate, with an outside framed leading bogie i have. Slightly shorter chimney, but dome & cab left as they are.
Cab steps could hide the void under the rear if you don't feel up to adding a rear truck.

I hope you don't abandon this one, i really like it. (but don't i always). Now i'm tempted to get an Avalon chassis myself.

Andrew, the dome is a Meridian Models item, they sell packs of domes and Chimneys for 009 models. Parkside usually have them in stock. I have a much bigger one that would look even better ;)

Jury's still out design wise. I may hang on until I can afford an Avalon 0-4-2 chassis, I think the design may suit that better. Add a leading truck and Sian's your Auntie.....

Colin,
That design has been niggling away at me as it looks familiar. Looking through my books last night i spotted an 0-6-0 tender loco in the Middleton Press "Romneyrail" book. The loco is Jack, from the Bredgar & Wormsill Miniature Railway. Details like its cab & chimney are more miniature in outline compared to yours, but the big cylinders & high running plate are similar.
I think i'll start another thread as i know nothing about that line or locos.
