Hi all.

For a new 7.25" gauge project, I'm looking for a Mardyke HST125 power car. It's not the chassis so much; but the body. I've contacted Lappa Valley, Strand MR (Gillingham) and a private owner in Kent as they have them, but neither are for sale. Has anyone seen one (or bits of them) in their travels? I'm aware there was one at Little Western Rly (Newquay) and Croxeth Park MR, and another once at the Felixstowe MR; but I can't find any contact numbers for them.

Would be interested to find any more.

Cheers

Tim,

There is every chance the Lappa Valley and Newquay examples are one and the same, as both lines were operated by the Booth family and shared stock at times.

Not sure what the Booth's have at Lappa & Little Western - there did, at one point, have several Intercitys and the APT, but I have a feeling there is just a single 125 at Little Western and the APT at Lappa.

Croxeth Park were/are looking for a new operator, may be worth approaching the local council who has the railway.

The Felixstowe equipment went to Bolebroke, heaven knows what's happened to it and where it is!

Croxteth has now got a new operator I think and work will begin there shortly so I think that may be off the list unforunately.

Up in Ness Islands there is Mardyke, not forgetting the one at Carnfunnock. Maybe you could ring the man up, see if it's avalible? :)

Last September (2005) Lappa had the APT in service and an HST power car in the shed/workshop at Benny Halt. Can't speak for Newquay, we didn't get there.

Could you not place an advert within the 7 1/4" Gauge Society?

Thanks for the info, all. Croxteth Park wasn't very helpful - they wouldn't give me details of the new operator. I've placed an ad with the 7 quarter society in our next newsletter, so let's hope something comes throught there. Alas the Carnfunnock (sp?) one is a homebuilt job; and as I've already got one power car, it needs to match that end. Lappa Valley were very nice, but said they really did need theirs. Did you know that the APT that now runs there (the only miniature railway APT in existence, incidentally) was built with the control unit at the centre of the train; the end units were both dummies in a push-pull configuration. Very unusual.

It seems that although at least 7 powered cars, most of the dummies have gone AWOL... not sure if I can face the bill for a new build one from Mardyke though. It'd be a very expensive passenger-carrying coach for three people.

Did you get any further info on the Carnfunnock one? I was interested in it, not at £5K though and was left waiting for more information from the builder!
Don't know where there are any more of the mardyke ones unfortuately!

I didn't make any enquiries on the Carnfunnock one - it looks to be at a smaller scale to my existing stock so wouldn't match up. All of the mardyke bits are ride-in; the Carnfunnock twin set looks to be ride-behind or ride-on. I don't know if that set includes any coaching stock either...

I agree it did look like a ride-behind. I think your best bet is the 7 1/4 inch gauge society.

You could try contacting Mardyke direct and ask them?

Mardyke can't help me sadly. They couldn't help with locating other dummy cars, and I talked through other potential options with them but a new build is out of the question (cost) for the next year or so. Given we're not going to run the existing set until 2008 anyway (it's a big rebuild) perhaps I'll have more cash in the kitty by then ;)

Did the Perry People mover project have one at the model village, I think some where near Dudley or Gornal in the Black Country.

Yes - Parry People Movers had a 2ft gauge line at the Himley Model Village. They acquired the Mardyke when the model village closed. The 2ft gauge line had at least three items of motive power on it - two being PPMs and one small petrol loco.

Out of interest there's a postcard of the Little Western Railway on ebay at the moment with one of the Mardyke 125s.

Interesting photo. That HST is one of the older style Mardyke ones - the nose cone is rather more basic than the later ones. I think the Lappa Valley and Little Western are from the same six or eight car set - and have been split - one at each site. But the one that I have and the ones at Croxteth and Strand are definitely better representations of the real locos...
