Has anyone any info on the Loco boiler fitted to tinkerbell locos? It is considered a standard design and does the loco ddesign require any major modification? Thanks & Happy Christmas to all (and a merry new year!!!) Craig |

All I know is that the original versions had marine boilers. You can just see the backhead of the original Tinkerbell in one of the photos on my website: http://steamandheritagerailways.fotopic.net/c1069847.html |

Hi Craig The original Tinkerbells did indeed have a marine type boiler - though I understand that the ones at Moors Valley have been modified to improve steaming. I gather the deflector at the front of the grate has been drilled to allow a bigger fire - but it might be worth asking them direct. The chairman of the Bath & West Railway - see www.essmee.org.uk - has a marine boilered Tinkerbell but he found the marine firebox toasted his knees. As a result, he lengthened the loco to allow more space. My own Tinkerbell "Ladybird" - completed by Roger Greatrex, has a superb locomotive type boiler which is just amazing. I have had little chance to run her as yet but she seems to have more than enough steam while being docile enough to sit and simmer for an hour or so. You can see her on the B&W site - in photos (or is it gallery) for 2006. She will be one of the locos hauling passengers in 2007 on this fantastic (I'm biassed!) new railway. Cheers Chris PS Great photos MuzTrem - if I may say so |

It helps if the loco was built properly in the first place - as originally built it had to long a smokebox or boiler (can't remember which), causing the whole thing to project too far into the cab. Conversely now Roger (Davis) has extended the loco it is now front heavy and see-saws on the font axle suspension thanks to Eric building it with a shorter wheelbase than the norm. Superbly engineered re-build though, I won't deny that. Princess on DMR is fine with her marine boiler, and she and Lady Pauline don't have shields on the ashpan. You have to watch out for Lady Pauline though as having a full cab there is little escape for the heat, so you are generally roasted in there anyway! See you at the Showground for Bath & West 2007 if not before Chris!
