I have been researching the history of the Strand Miniature Railway at Gillingham in Kent for several years now.

2008 will be the 60th Anniversary of the line opening.

It would be nice to publish a booklet on the line next year.

I would appreciate any photographs or information on the railway (or the other lines that have operated in and around the Medway Towns over the years).

As I have a very busy job, I do not have a great deal of time to continue the research or prepare something for next year, so I would appreciate any help.

Please feel free to contact me at 'jonathan.james@hotmail.co.uk'

Thanks

Jonathan James

*Moved to Open/Operating railways forum as a more appropriate area - it's previous position was for feedback concerning Miniature Railway World.*

I have found websites with plenty of history on them about the Strand MR. Unfortunately the main one (www.strandminiaturerailway.co.uk) doesn't want to work at the moment - is this particular address still live?

All I know is that the current circuit operates on only a short stretch of the original end-to-end line.

I am aware that the history is steep and plentiful, but unfortunately cannot help much more, but good luck on your quest!

The line was run for some time by Derek Smith, who also constructed the website. He handed control back to the council just over a year ago. He is an accomplished historian and researcher, so I would imagine that he has already made significant inroads into the history of the railway; if you'd like his contact details then drop me a line. He made massive changes in a short time, including refurbishing much of the circuit, rediscovering old stock and then having the stock completely overhauled. Alas it appeared that with so many park lines, security was hard to maintain and the vandals continued to destroy the finer pieces of equipment.

I've tried contacting Black Lion Leisure who now operate the line (a division of the council) but they've been incredibly difficult in getting information from them on the current status and stock.

Tim,

That would explain why, when I last managed to load the website, it hadn't been updated for a while.

For what it is it is a line with quite an interesting and extensive history; just a pity I didn't bookmark the page at the time or take the finer details in! :(

http://www.whitstablepier.com/smr/ - The website can still be viewed here.

Welcome to the forums, Jonathan, glad you've joined. Will send you along an email sometime!

I personally don't have any information myself on the Strand MR that you probably won't have!

Thanks
Peter
