I recently purchased a second hand N.G. Diesel Outline, Battery/Electric 0-4-0 Loco and Riding Tender. Based, although not accurate, on a Hunslet. The chassis and mechanical parts are in good condition, but the bodywork is nothing to shout about, as you can see from this image. ![]() However, I wasn't too bothered about the appearance of the body, as my intention, was to discard it completely and build a new one. As you can see, it is too box like and those vents really don't do it justice. In fact it is b----y awful!
The original body, had been made out of three quarter inch thick, M.D.F. which I consider is not the ideal material for building a loco body. It is very heavy and needs to be well waterproofed, for it to stay good. I am sticking to wood, for the cab & bonnet, because I like working with wood. The material I am using though, is 12mm exteria grade Birch Ply. This is more expensive than ordinary ply, but has a good grain and nicer finish to it. The bonnet top, is made from 4mm Birch Ply, left over from my warship modelling, this again, is top quality ply. The riding truck that came with the loco, has been given to a friend, as I already had ordered a new chassis & wheelset, with stronger springing. So, here ia how I went about building the new body. ![]() I started on building the bonnet first, and this was with a curved top, made from 4 mm ply, which bends quite easily to the shape. All joins are glued, using White PVA waterproof adhesive and then screwed or pinned into positition. ![]() You may notice, that I have used the same ventilator grills, but these have been cut down and repositioned, which look much better when painted, as you will see later. ![]() The old front grill however, was discarded and replaced with a 1/16th steel mesh from the back of an old computer ( when computers were much larger than they are today). ![]() Note I have inserted a curved former at the centre, to support the roof of the bonnet, which will be added later. The framing for the bonnet, was made from one inch by one and a half inch scots pine ( available in packs of 12, at 2 meters in length from B&Q). The next job, was to make a complete new floor for the loco chassis, in fact, there was no floor on the old body, except for a piece inside the cab. the rest was open below the separate bonnet. However, this was an oportunity for me to resite the motor from where it had been placed, which was under the cab floor. This made it awkward to get at, without removing the cab, so I decided to move it forward of the cab area, so that it was in fact, now under the bonnet area, which simply lifts off. I had to make a new mounting bracket for the motor, and raise it slightly, to take up tension on the chain, so I used a small block of 12 mm ply, which was just right. ![]() TO BE CONTINUED.............WATCH THIS SPACE!
