Taken from here Steam trains were back in action on an historic piece of Westcountry railway architecture over the weekend.Trains of any kind have not crossed the Meldon Viaduct near Okehampton for almost 40 years. But this weekend the Dartmoor Railway was able to change that and ran a steam service across the mighty viaduct, which spans the River Okement. The train in question took the form of a miniature five-inch gauge line laid specially for the weekend over the viaduct, which is now used as a footpath and cycleway. Three different miniature steam locos were in use pulling coaches that passengers sat on. The miniature railway is owned and operated by Mike Bass of the Strawberry Line, which is normally based at the East Somerset Railway, but also travels around the country. The Strawberry Line boasts an LMS Black Five, an LBSC E4 and a tank engine. The Dartmoor Railway normally only operates passenger services over the five-mile section from Meldon Quarry to Sampford Courtenay. -- Can any one spot the journalists error..? |

That the East Somerset Railway is nicknamed 'The Strawberry Line', and that the 5 inch gauge Strawberry line is quite a way a way from the ESR B) |

Correct MTA, the 5" Strawberry Line (only 5" commercial railway) is in the Avon Valley Country Park in Keynsham, 30 miles away! Closer to the Avon Valley Railway
 Conversely, the ESR shouldn't HAVE the nickname Strawberry Line, as strawberries were NOT grown in that area of Somerset. It was the line from Yatton to Wells via Cheddar which ran strawberry trains. Cheers, Dom Greenop DMR |
