There are many modellers in the 4mm scale field who are taking the motors and bogies/gear towers from locos such as Bachmann class 25s and using them to drive DMUs and EMUs. They are losing the chassis frames and weights in the process and building new ones from scratch. I think this approach may work with the Kato shortie chassis, taking out the motor and powered bogie and putting them in a new frame. However, drawbacks I can forsee are that the bogie is outside frames, and that I seem to recal that the pick-ups are on the other bogie. Of course if building your own chassis you could arrange pick up through the driving wheels and tender wheels. However, as I wasn't too impressed with the performance (speed) of the Kato drive I'm not really planning to find out for myself if this might work! Colin |
