I have been interested in model railways from an early age, starting with 00 and 009 and have now progressed to 7 1/4". I also have a 16mm garden layout, belong to a model engineering club and run 5" gauge locos. Our 7 1/4" loco (Jack) is based at the Dragon Miniature Railway at Marple and runs every other Saturday. Looking forward to sharing knowledge and experiences with the other members. Neil |

Hi All, The full size Jack was originally built by Hunslet Engine Company as No. 684 and was ordered by Messrs John Knowles, on Christmas Eve, 1897, for their Mount Pleasant fireclay works, weighing in empty at 4 tons 13cwt with 6"x8" outside cylinders. Being of 18" gauge, a well tank design (under the smokebox) was chosen to lower the centre of gravity, which then also necessitated the fitting of outside cylinders. In 1915 Jack was used as the model for a further 12 locos of the same general design delivered to the government meat depot at Deptford. Some of the Deptford rolling stock later making its way to the Sand Hutton Railway. Jack was joined later by sister loco No. 1404, Gwen, in 1920. Gwen was similar in outline to the Deptford locos. Jack and Gwen were both coal fired, the Deptford locos being oil fired. The original 18" gauge Jack was withdrawn in 1958 and still survives having been restored to running order in the early 1980s and was running up until 2006 at the Leeds Industrial Museum, at Armley Mills. Gwen survives in working order over in California. Jack's builder, Paul Frank, went along to Armley Mills and took photos of Jack. From measurements and the photo's he took Paul produced working drawings and completed Jack around 2001. Jack was based at the Millerbeck Light Railway until last year when he was moved to Wyevale. Jack is an absolute delight to drive and very forgiving if you are a novice driver. Neil |

Let me know if there is a GA or overview of the loco. My good friend Romeo in Napoli is keen to build a model of Jack and is looking for a GA to work out generl sizes etc. |
