If you mean the cylinders off #6, in the first qtr of 2002 the then General Manager decided that they should be cut apart ready to be rebuilt. It was subsequently decided that rebuilding the said cylinders was a non runner and new cylinders were ordered from Alan Keef Ltd to a design produced by BVR staff and a BVR volunteer. See http://www.steam-loco-design.co.uk/pages/zb_article_2.html. It is now proposed to use the old #6 cylinders to show how such items work. I do not know what happened to the original Winson cylinders off #9. The 7" dia. cylinders on #7 were found to have loose liners. Subsequently #7’s cylinders were modified by BVR staff to have a reduced main diameter of 6.5”, but with increased ports. Loco. #8 is currently being rebuilt from oil fired to coal fired, during its ten year overhaul. As it was not very popular as an oil fired loco., it has not done many miles compared with the other BVR ZB type locos. It still has its original cylinders – unmodified as yet! David Barnes. |

I know what you mean, I was at Ratty in 2001 when Thunder Visited and it was awful!!!! I was just wondering with the cylinders, i would hate for a good set which were no longer suitable for the BVR to be scrapped when they could be used for a smaller loco

Now I am sure someone has told me that a new loco is being built somewhere around the old cylinders, but don't hold me to that! Colin |

Craig, I’m sorry Craig, but the cylinders off #6 are passed it. The piston valve area was removed in 2002 to make way for a more modern assembly. Unfortunately, a gas axe does nothing for the stability of a welded fabrication. Colin, The Winson cylinders from #9 were taken off the loco by Alan Keef Ltd., when they rebuilt it. So it is probable that they found a new home for them. General note re BVR ZB cylinders: The problem with the original ZB cylinders was that they were designed as large versions of a 3.5” gauge design, with lots of 90 degree bends for the steam to pass through, so the steam could not / cannot get out of the cylinders very freely. By reducing the main cylinder bore on #7 and improving the ports, the performance of #7 was improved considerably, because it reduced the steam requirements yet improved the steam flow. The new front end design on BVR locos #6 & #9 has resulted in far more powerful locos; a 25% reduction in coal consumption and a tremendously extended life for fire bars. The only down side is the cost of the cylinders and the labour to fit them! No I’m not declaring the exact cost of just the new cylinders, but if you wanted a new pair today you would not get any change out of about £20k. David Barnes. |

Craig,
I'm not sure what the Romney line speed is! Ok so what would be its spec - Cylinder size; wheels; boiler info? Would it pull a std 12 coach + Brk Van BVR up and down the BVR at up to 20mph? Or even 8 coaches + Brk Van? David. |

Its St Egwin!!!!!! Get it down there and find out! Line speed Romney is 18-20 MPH to hold timetable. She haules the equivilant of 10 coaches (8+Bar Car) down there. Cylinders are i think, 5 x 7, wheel dia 14", boiler approx 20" dia. She would slip before she ran out of power! Craig |

Craig, A few weeks ago I visited Evesham Vale Light Railway spoke to the owner of St Egwin, Steve Bell (?) and a visit to the BVR was mentioned. A new topic may appear soon re a possible BVR Gala in 2008. The BVR has the gradients to test most locos. (I'm not yet quite sure how to get a doc like a gradient profile to display on this site )A potential problem with St Egwin, as it was with #24, may well be wheel size, i.e. only 14". One of the requirements of the BVR is sustained power for 45 minutes, up hill and down dale. Some time ago I drew up a table of Tractive Efforts for various NG locos. But we have proved that TE does not mean a lot. I tried to enter a table below, showing the drawbar pull of BVR locos #7; #8; and two tests on #9 all of which have the same Nominal TE, but the table came out all mixed up! However, the values for Drawbar power HP were 35.6; 40.1; 63.5 and 90 respectively! The above information is from Ian Gaylor’s site, where full details of the tests and results may be found: http://www.steam-loco-design.co.uk/pages/zb_article_4.html BVR#6 is basically the same as #9 Perhaps we should move this discussion the Locomotives! David. |

I realise that this post is a littel old, but have been away from my normal forum routine, and hadnt spotted it... I haven’t heard that there is a loco being built around the old cylinders, and what David Barnes subsequently said relating to the gas axe, it in a way dispels any myth that there is such a loco being built. There is however, a loco being built based around the new ZB cylinders as designed by Ian Gaylor of Steam Loco Design. The loco is to be a 2-6-4 tank, and is being built as a long term project privately |

John If you follow the link above, and then select "new design" from the selection on the right of the screen, you'll see that the projected new loco is a 2-8-0T, not a 2-6-4T; and from the stated dimensions, it will be a very, very large loco for 15" gauge. Mick |

Yes, serious machines. I'd like to see how they would perform on the Ratty in comparison to their own locos (notably Rock which was designed and built in-house). Or on the flat 'racing ground' of the Romney line. Mick, you never know, the 4-6-2T could be a different design by someone else, not hte designer or anyone on BVR staff. However, the 2-8-0T would be a different machine to see. Cheers, Dom Greenop DMR |
