BVR #1 was the standby loco over Easter. #1 is due to make two visits away from home this year – both northwards. BVR #7 has recently emerged from a wheel turn and a repaint. See: BVR #7 emerges. On Saturday last, BVR #8 was taken into the workshop for tidy-up for the BVR "Everything Goes" weekend on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th May 2009. After the event, #8 is due to have some serious work on its cylinders. It is the only BVR “ZB” type loco with its original cylinders. Locos #6 & #9 were the main locos in use over Easter. |

Yesterday, Sunday, Bure Valley Railway No. 7 had its first steaming after its recent mini overhaul and repaint. In the evening, it hauled a test train to Hautbois and back, with its owner in the cab. See the BVR Engineering website for photos: BVR #7 - first steaming for a few months. Subsequent photos on the website show additional photos of #7. Photo p57802868 also shows the BVR Flail under its protective cover and a standard BVR coach bogie (behind a bucket) - the bogie with the metalastic suspension. The other pair of bogies came off the ex Fairbourne box van that arrived at Aylsham with #24. Tomorrow, Tuesday, #7 is due to haul the service trains. This coming Saturday, Sunday and B/H Monday all five BVR steam locos are due to be in operation for the "Everything Goes" event. See BVR "Everything Goes" timetable here. The Westinghouse pump, took a little longer than it should have done to "pump up the train pipe", so the first train of the day was a few minutes late leaving. However, after that the newly out shopped #7 performed extremely well on its service today. |

The following information has just been used to reply to a question about brakes, but I have placed another copy here for completeness re BVR locomotives: On the Bure Valley Railway a single pipe brake system is used, with a maximum train pipes pressure of 60psi. Compressed air is produced on the locomotives using both a "Westinghouse" type steam pump and an axle driven compressor (except #1). On BVR#6 & #7 (2-6-2 Tender locos) the axle pump is driven off the rear tender wheels as is the battery charger and speed recorder - all located in a compartment at the rear of the tender. The tank locos, #1, #8 & #9 have similar arrangements except that #1 does not have an axle driven compressor. In addition, all locos have steam brakes & hand brakes. Locos #8 & #9 also have air brakes on their driving wheels. Locos #6 & #7 have air brakes on their tender wheels. A valve is currently being manufactured by the BVR so that the air brake system applies the steam brakes on locos #1, #6 & #7. There are restrictor valves on the air control systems on the locos so that if the Guard dumps the brakes, the locos do not pump air into the train pipe faster than the Guard can dump the air. There also additional small 5L reservoirs on all locos, except #9, to speed up the air brake release. The main air reservoirs on the Tender locos are under the tender. The air reservoirs on the tank locos are: #1 under the coal bunk, beside cab footsteps, #8 between the tanks and the boiler (a tube either side of the boiler) & #9 under coal bunker, between the main frames under the boiler (3 No.) |

The following information has been added to the UKminiaturerailways Yahoo group, but I thought that it may also be useful to update MRWF: The two most powerful Bure Valley Railway (BVR) "ZB" engines are #6 & #9. Both are fitted with new cylinders, which replaced their original "Winson" units. They now consume between 6 & 7 buckets of coal to haul a return train from Aylsham to Wroxham and back – just under 18 miles in total. The cylinders of BVR #7 were reduced in size from 7" to 6.5" and its piston valves upgraded after it was found that its original cylinder liners were loose. Prior to the cylinder changes, #7 was using up to 13 buckets of coal for a return trip. It now uses about 8 buckets of coal for the return trip, but more mods are possible. BVR "ZB" #8 was built in 1996/7 as an oil fired loco, which nobody liked driving because it was hard work (with the oil feed taps, etc); it was noisy and it did not smell right! It therefore had cylinders that were not very worn when it re-entered service as a coal fired loco in July 2008, but with its original Winson cylinders. It currently uses too much coal, but is due to have its piston valves and cylinders modified within the next year, after which it is anticipated that it will only require about 8 buckets of coal for the round trip. Within the next 5 years, #8 is also due to have a new smokebox, when the exhaust passages from the cylinders will be improved. After the BVR Gala last October, BVR "ZB" #6 hauled a 22 coach train from Wroxham (up hill!) to Aylsham in less than the timetabled time of 45 minutes. The train was limited to 22 coaches because only 22 were available – 5 other coaches were being refurbished at the time. The above four locos are referred to as "ZB" class, because the first two BVR 2-6-2 "ZB" locos, #6 & #7, were built in 1994 as half size models of the Indian Railways 2'-6" gauge "ZB" class. BVR #8 (2-6-2T) & #9 (2-6-4T) were subsequently built with the same basic components as #6 & #7. All the BVR "ZB" class are fitted with sanding gear. At the end of the day, the real question regarding locomotives is "Is the loco suitable for the tasks that are asked of it?" At the end of April 2009, BVR passenger numbers were up by 96% compared with last year. Lets hope they continue to increase. Best wishes, |

96% is a really good increase! Nice one! Just a quick question, do BVR loco's have baffle plates and brick arches in the firebox? |

I can't believe that after ALL the work carried out on No6 there is no brick-arch. It would be like spending a fortune on a haircut and then wearing a hat..... |

I can confirm that "Yes", we do have a brick arch on all locos as well as a deflector plate. The arches are cast using a ceramic cement. We have plans to improve our current arches by extending them by about 6". This is so that they will cover the supporting bars completely in order to stop them getting burnt. I hope this answers the doubts raised by Andrew. If you want to find out more about BVR locos, just ask. Best wishes, |

All BVR steam locos are available for traffic at present, except #8 "Thunder", which is currently out of service awaiting a boiler ticket that we are in no hurry to get at present. The new ticket will last 14 months so if we postpone it for a little while it will last us until the end of our main season next year - at the end of October 2010. Fortunately, the boiler inspector only lives about 10 miles away, so if we need to get #8 back into traffic due to any of the other locos failing, it will not take more than a day or two. In the meantime, 4 working steam locos and a diesel should be enough to run a two train service! Best wishes, |

Before on these pages, I have mentioned the Bure Valley Railway’s steam locomotive fleet. However, some readers may be interested to watch the video at: BVR #4 Loco. The above clip gives an idea of some of the behind the scenes work on the BVR. There are also some BVR steam locomotive clips at: BVR #7 &: BVR #8 (use HQ if possible) If you are thinking of finding Santa, please see: Santa arrives at Aylsham (Use HQ if possible) For those that want to see real live BVR locomotives in action, plus a few "extras", visit the BVR Gala next weekend (10th / 11th October). Best wishes, |

All of the BVR locomotives were available for traffic at the recent BVR “Small Engines” Gala on the 10th / 11th October, although #8 was kept in reserve and not steamed. #8 was not used because it still has the original unmodified “Winson” cylinders. However, this week the cylinders are to be dismantled so that they can be modified in a similar way to those on #7 “Spitfire” – new liners with reduced main bores from 7” to 6.5” and improved steam passageways. Currently #8 uses about 12 to 13 buckets of coal to get from Aylsham to Wroxham and back, compared with the 7 to 8 buckets used by #7 and only 6 to 7 buckets used by #6 & 9#, which both have new cylinders. Further improvements are expected in coal consumption with both #7 & #8 when their boilers and smokeboxes are next removed. The reason for not fitting new cylinders to #8 is simple – cost. The new cylinders on #6 & #9 now produce more power than is normally required. As mentioned previously, #6 hauled 22 coaches from Wroxham to Aylsham, within the 45 minutes allowed in the timetable, after the 2008 BVR Gala. Trains are normally restricted to a maximum of twelve coaches, due to the length of the passing loops. Last weekend (10th / 11th) October, at the BVR Gala, Perrygrove’s “Lydia” was easily able to haul nine coach trains between Aylsham and Wroxham (9 miles), within the 45 minutes allowed in the timetable. During the Gala, the Evesham Vale “St Egwin” easily maintained the normal timetable timings with 5 coaches between Aylsham and Brampton. “Out of hours”, “St Egwin” also hauled a 3 coach train the full length of the line, within the timetabled 45 minutes, although at times “St Egwin” sounded more like a diesel loco due to the fact that its 14” wheels were going around rather fast. On the Saturday evening of the Gala, the CCLR 04 “ROD” hauled a train from Aylsham to Coltishall and back, without any problems, other than the fact that much of the journey was in the dark which restricted its speed. The CCLR “Mountaineer” also performed well on the 2.4 mile Aylsham to Brampton shuttle. Notes to Craig Gluyas: 1. Sorry Craig, the cylinders from #8 are not going begging (see 12 Aug 2007 above). 2. Thank you for suggesting that "St Egwin" should visit the BVR (14 Aug 2007 above). Best wishes, |

Thanks David! Point 1 - Always worth investigating! Point 2 - Glad to be of assistance. I know St Egwin is only a relativly small loco, but it does do very well considering how basic the Exmoor design is. There are areas they could be improved, (cylinders & steam pipes spring to mind) but they do the job asked for them and at a good price! (I believe St Egwin when new was about 1/5th that of Lydia!) Looks to have been a good event. Had I not been dragged to London for a family doo I would have been there!! |
