Surely Taw should be a quick job because it steamed at Weston Park?

Hi there, The Vale of Rheidol loco you refer to Alex, was the property of a gentleman called John Salem, it is brand new in the sense that after arriving for delivery in the village OF begnins in swiss canton of Vaud some 20 miles from Geneva. every Saturday we would go and as he put it "play trains" He had a fantastic collection of loco's about 30 or so,5" and 7.25"this was in1980.we returned to the UK in early 1981, to my knowledge it only steamed 3 times and was a dream to drive, the problem was getting it in and out of the engine room as it weighed approx 3/4 ton and all the loco's were on mobile trolleys which were wheeled out to the incline ramp down to the track. It was a scary operation I can tell you as the ramp was not really strong enough for that loco. I was present at 2 of the steaming's and it was a pig of a job getting it back up the ramp, he ran it for the last time when I was not there and according to him it almost fell of from a height of 3ft, after that it never came out again. When I saw it at the NRM I had a long chat with the curator, but they were adamant it would not be steamed, very sad. By the way John was an old cotton King and raced in his youth a class J racing yacht, he also had a 1929 Bentley and a 1936 Lagonda sports tourer he had owned from new. I hope this snippet tells you a bit about the loco and the man, by the way I think the builder was a guy called Potter possibly a Yorkshireman. all the best, Richard. |

Hi there, thanks for the photo's, they bring back so many memories. John Salem was not in any way a snob, he wore his Eton tie round his waist to hold up his trousers, when my wife asked where is the loo, he replied, pick a bush! your playing with the boys now. Tea was served in the kettle,milk and sugar already added,like it or lump it. I am not surprised at the money raised from the auction of his loco's, he had a party piece with the Duchess loco, he would disconnect a piece of the vacuum pipe and put a cigarette to the pipe, to show how well the vacuum worked, the ciggy would burn down in 1 minute to show how good the suction of the vacuum, what he didn't say was that he spent the next 3 days removing the nicotine and tar deposits from the pipework. The only thing that intrigues me is that his son was killed in about 1978/9 crossing the road from the house to the land where the garage and layout was, he never mentioned any other children? All in all an amazing guy.To AJ Coulls I am led to understand you are at the NRM in York, I was born and raised in Manor Drive up on Boroughbridge road, I have many times visited the NRM since it moved from London,but sadly since I left to live in Bulgaria I have not been able to see properly the model of the Gyroscopic monorail of the great Louis Brennan, a true genius, would it be possible to get a few detail shots of the model, all the photo's I have seen have reflections from the glass case. It is the Gyro's that I am interested in and how the linkage worked between the 2 of them. By the way John also had a lovely steam roller that he bought from the canton of Vaud and he would trundle up the road every now and then, as there was no license category for a steam powered vehicle.
