Jordan, King Tut, 2-4-2 built by a Mr S.Smith (not our Steve I think!) in 1934. The line pictured here is 9.5 inch and operated here until 1983. It was regauged to 7.25" for use at Wellington Country Park, but has since moved elsewhere. Thanks Peter |

Ah yes I remember it well. It lived in a wriggly tin hut (old garage) at the back of Embsay station. I seem to remember it was an odd gauge...? I stopped going up there in the early 80's for a while but it was certainly there when I left. Not a long run of track, it went from the back of the station up to the top gate. I can't remeber who operated it but it didn't run that often. Fairly game when it did. JP |

Thanks for finding this. I remember the railway and Geoff and Jeremy Bull very well as i was Treasurer of the Yorkshire Dales Railway at the time. It is quite true that the little railway did keep the organisation going because running standard gauge trains was banned until the light railway order was granted. Sadly one that had happened interest waned and a new boiler required by a very game little engine. It would be nice to know where it is now and see it ideally in use. Embsay has a short 7.25 inch line at Bolton Abbey with plans to extend. I'll point the possibilities out to the right people |

Robin Butterell's Bradford Barton book "Steam on Britains MR's" has a photo of this loco at the Slate Quay at Caernarvon in 1972. Apparently it belonged to Captain Hewitt at one time. Bob. |

A very interesting article on King Tut and the last time I saw it was running on the Embsay line. I may be wrong but I think the article is getting the Ilkley sights confused. The line by the River and Rugby club near the centre of Ilkley never saw King Tut at all. This line at Ilkley was originally built by John Harrison and was 12" gauge using the George Flooks loco "Prince Edward" (see archives MRW). Terry Stanhope took the line over after John Harrison in about 1973. He converted the railway to 10.25" gauge and used a loco that he constructed and this loco was finished in blue. Also in the shed at this time were at least one of the chassis and components from the battery electric locos that ran at Cleethorpes. I think that his loco contained some parts from the Cleethorpes loco possibly wheel sets. As for King Tut I understood that it ran on a separate line further out out of Ilkley at the Caravan sight just past the present hockey club. The caravan sight still exists but in a much reduced form.. I never saw King Tut there to identify it but I did once get a fleeting glimpse of a loco running by the river near the caravan site, as I was driving past. John |

It could call at Crewe for a run here while on its way We bought our loco from the same chap/harbour wall - He had sold King Tut some years before. Its right next to the current WHR Station. Ryan, bit far at the moment for a running visit, but would like to come for a look when the opportunity arises (We've called to see J Hall-Craggs, Cleveleys, Matlock and The Downs School line so far). I wonder what happened to the Wembley Coaches - we have two - really nice on a garden line. Martin G. |

Hello Martin, two very nice locos you have there, think they will be dwarfed by ours a bit haha. As i say am sure with some notice that you will be welcome to have a visit any time, in the 40 years we have been at Shields we have never had a visiting loco ![]() Here are a few pics of our locos http://www.monkchester.co.uk/south_shields_26.htm http://www.flickr.com/photos/21602076@N05/6942364709/in/set-72157625963699534 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2827108 I will point out in case you dont realise........ the last image is what the black loco (MOUNTAINEER) looked like from 1966 until 1977 where it got converted from atlantic to pacific and is still running strong to this day. The red loco (ADIELA) was completed in its current form in 1976 but was originally a 2-8-0 and ran at Danson park back in the 40's if my mind serves me right. |
