I have just found this YouTube video of the Exmoor Steam Railway. Looks to be quite an impressive set up!

It 'was' an impressive set-up but is sadly no longer open to the public :(

Hi

I have seen the video before, very good and i really like the looks of the loco with the tall chimney and big spectical plates gives to loco a Moors Valley feel to it. Doesnt anybody know that name of the loco and where it is now as i couldnt see it clearly as the loco went past.

It is 'Lorna Doone' Alex.

The name rings a bell, but as to its location I cannot recall

It's 0-6-0T Lorna Doone. She was rebuilt 2001 (or around then) to a 10.25" 0-6-2T and now runs on the Beale Railway in Berkshire.

Maybe to confuse matters, there's a new Lorna Doone which is a 0-4-2T and ran at Exbury for a while, but I think is now back at Exmoor.

Just found a set of photos from Exmoor in 1991 on the web, showing Yeo Valley in service. Thought they might be of interest to forum members; I've cheekily embedded a few below, but you can see the full set here.

What I love is that from afar, they look like great big NG locos - but look a little closer at those coaches and you'll see some passengers squashed inside. They really do look like well proportioned 2ft gauge stock and surroundings.

Neat little set of photos there, Anthony!! Great find. Shows perfectly the style of railway that Exmoor try (or at least tried - most users of their locos have gone to create their own style - as is right in my book) to create with their products, and just how a miniature-narrow-gauge railway (words chosen carefully) can fit in to the local landscape.

Cheers,

I have just posted Exmoor Steam Railway 1993 (1) on YouTube ... this first part covers a full-line trip over the railway as it was in 1993 and the second part, Exmoor Steam Railway 1993 (2), shows 'Lorna Doone' in action out from lineside.

Thanks Nick, fascinating stuff as always. Your videos show it very much as I can (hazily) remember it on my first visit in 1994 and makes for an interesting comparison with memories from my more "recent" visit in 2001 and a video I borrowed recently which had shots of Mariloo on test in April.

P.S. For anyone interested, I understand (and as usual could be completely wrong) that the Stirlands would quite like to take a year off engine building in order to lay around a mile of 2ft gauge track and get a Garratt or two running.

I would quite like to get a Stirland built loco for Ruislip Lido Railway, but sadly some people there are not so keen on the idea.

Very interesting photos Charles, well done for finding them :)
It's interesting that Yeo Valley seems to have become a 2-8-2T in those photos - in the postcard view previously posted in the "Exmoor locos" thread she is an 0-8-2T, with a much shorter front-end. Personally I think she was more attractive in her original form, but if those photos are from '91 then she must have been modified very early in her life. I presume the extra wheels must have been to improve riding, unless anyone knows different?
