What happened to "silver belle" ? I've seen a pic of her at Steamport in the 1970s - but no listing of her again after that. She was built by Barlow (who built the Lakeside Miniature Rly locos) . Anyone know where she is now? I LOVE these railcar things... and yes, I'm in the market for any

She doesn't appear on UKLocos, will have a look in my books at work in the morning. I have a postcard of her from the early 70s and I recall the pic of a line up of the stock in 1977 in an old Narrow Gauge Times. Good pic, where did you find it? Cheers Anthony |

2ft gauge, but in another photo I've seen, the wheel arrangement looks similar to barlow's LMR locos. There was a s/o loco possibly on the same chassis another time, and the matching coaches went to the west lancs rly - dunno if they are there. Theyre in the same streamlined way. It was replaced by an enlarged Severn Lamb "western" called English Rose, which is now at the Lynbarn in Devon. It was known as the Southport Pier Miniature Railway. More photos later. |

Ok, history time!!! She was scrapped. The wheel arrangement was 4-6-0 - 0-6-4 with rods using the same wheels and transmission as the Barlows. Following scrapping i assume the parts went back to Lakeside Miniature Railway as spares. The wheels are now in use on 15" gauge! One set is under Austins barlow Duke of Edinburgh after her spoked set were replaced with disc at Knowsley Safari Park. The other set are under the 1987 built City of London. Hope that helps! Craig |

Bummer Another one to strike off the list of potential exhibits for Tim's-Museum-of-Odd-Modernish-Railway-Items-that-Nobody-Wants (including other such items as Southend Pier cars, Wickham Railcars, that Norweigan Railway railcar from "The Village Experience" in Norfolk, a Baguley S/O, Lappa Valley Gladiator, CHessinton GWR 4-4-0s and anything infernal combustion on 15" gauge) Another pic of it here showing the wheels http://johnlawontherails.fotopic.net/p37264097.html I thought that you'd have the answer, Craig... Just another reason why I really should come up to have a look at the places near Southport... Windmill Farm, Southport Model Village, Lakeside Miniature, Blackpool Tramway, Ribble Steam Rly, West Lancs, Derek Moss... they're all in spitting distance |

Yep, B&P too... HST not due out until 2009 though! We were all set to buy a house near Rochdale to let out - but given the housing market we're probably pulling out... we were all set to have several weekends up that way whilst doing it up

One of the coaches from the Pier at West Lancs ran for a while, but was rebuilt later into the toastrack style coach operating today. |

I think both the West Lancs coaches have their origins in Southport Pier stock. It is a shame how 'stylish' objects such as these are scrapped by a future generation as being out of fashion, only for an even later generation to appreciate them for what they are. Colin |

I think it's a generational thing, those that converted the Southport car at West Lancs probably wanted to recreate a steam worked NG rly, a lot of us now would liked to have seen an original 'southport' car. Many of the older generation (with due deference and respect) are not interested in these oddballs from the age of functionality - witness the hoo haa on Nat Pres over the imminent withdrawal of Green Arrow. You'd think the world was going to end! |

Sigh. It's true. We often do not appreciate what we currently have. I'm often an advocate of rebuilding and reconstruction; had the Southport coaches not been kitbashed at the WLR, then it's possible they would have been scrapped entirely. Lord knows what happened to the "spare" Southend pier cars after Tan-y-cafn shut. I want one. But I doubt I'll ever get one. But then, given that they've been kitbashed into toastracks and are unrecognisable now, is there really any preservation at work here at all? Their appearance has gone, their context has gone, their design has gone. So effectively the artefact has gone. They're no longer Southport Pier vehicles; they're WLR coaches. In an article on the WLR in The Narrow Gauge, it states two Pier coaches went to the WLR. And in the corner of this photo, (WLR website) you can just see one of the coaches.

These definitly fall into the same "if only" category as "Dingo" from the Fairbourne Railway. I suppose it is easy with hindsight to question the decisions made by preservationists in the early days of some heritage railways - I think, to be honest, Narrow Gauge Railways have always been quite cavallier in their approaches to things - but at the time the preservationsist priorities were probably to get trains running and using surplus, and what they probably saw as unhistoric, rolling stock as donors may have been the quickest way. I would like to think we approach things slightly more open minded today but I suspect even then in 30 years time someone on some communication device will be saying what on earth made them do that! We could always build a replica! Stuart |

Great, I'll just add it to my own list of "locos to build when I win the lottery" (along with replicas of Dingo, the first River Mite, Colossus, Sir Aubrey Brocklebank, the enlarged Katie/Sian style 2-6-2, a couple of BL class 20s and 30s...well, it goes on...) |
