Cracking pictures there Derek, thanks for sharing them. Particularly like the bogie shot clearly showing the Guest bogie....

Now, has anyone a pic of the cab as I can't see a footwell....

Very interesting pics Derek, thanks for sharing
Thinking back, I think there was some talk at the time of the R&ER preservation soeciety sending a representative down to the auction to buy Royal Anchor for the ratty if the collection was split, purely for heritage reasons

Many thanks for sharing those excellent pics Derek. I must have visited on the other running day to you as ROYAL ANCHOR remained in the shed on my visit.

Glad the pictures have been of interest - will, when time allows, put up other Carnforth pics taken at the time on a different thread. It was a shame that the collection was sold overseas but the amount of money needed to keep it in the UK would have been considerable. It is interesting that the collection has moved on again. I will try to contact some railfans I knew through the RH&DR in San Francisco and see if they can shed any light on it.

Craig, as far as a footwell was concerned I don't remember one when I sat in it on the visit to Carnforth.

By 2006 new boilers had been made for both steam locomotives, but the pace of progress then decreased and circumstance forced transfer of the locos to a new restoration base also in California.

That should narrow the search down a bit for you!!

Gents, I contacted the Golden Gate RR Museum and got a reply. The four Steamtown loco were at the Golden Gate Railroad Museum being restored. ROYAL ANCHOR was a runner and new boilers built for the steamers. Alas they had to vacate their site in 8/2005 and the stock was returned to F F Coppola. Cheers , Dave

Thanks for the update Dave. At least the loco's have been worked on, presumably including Doctor Diesel. The trail of ROYAL ANCHOR always seems to go cold after a while of digging around, but every now and again a little bit more info rises to the surface. Given that as built the body work looked quite professional I have wondered whether any drawings were every produced for / by Charles Lane? I get the impression that the loco was built with RHDR in mind hence the buffers and draw hook arrangement though as has been written elsewhere it wasn't a success there. I've also wondered if the loco ever ran anywhere else between leaving the RHDR and arriving at the R&ER?

Interesting update there, Dave!

Currently in Florida... I know the link's pretty tenuous but today I saw a bottle of Chardonnay from Francis Ford Coppola's winery (where the railway was to be, possibly where the stock is now in store)... cue photo time!
