Is there any possibility of a real steam loco being built for Scarborough's North Bay Railway or one of the extisting locos being converted (like the Bure Valley did with Tracey Jo) - I'm assuming there's no 20" gauge steam locos in the uk already. |

We are in the process of sorting out how to fund a steam engine and what to build. Whilst you never say never, it is unlikely that any of the existing four will be converted to steam. Two reasons; with the intensive service that we are putting in place, we will need at least 3 loco's available at peak times and 1 spare. Also, the four main loco's are of historic significance in that they are the oldest (Neptune) 2nd (Robin Hood) 3rd (Triton) and 4th (Poseidon) oldest diesel hydraulic locomotives in the world and accordingly, I would not like to change that record. It could be done though. At present, we are planning a narrow gauge Bagnall - 'Sipat' class 0-4-0. The aim is to get 60= people to contribute £2.50 per week . Adding the tax back, we should be able to build it within 200 weeks - 4 years. It will be owned by the group outside my ownership, but the aim is for all who are involved with its construction to be able to train to drive her on an as and when basis. Mathematically, she should be able to pull 3 coaches and at 4' wide will fit down the track. Others have more grand idea's for a bigger locomotive, but the cost rises dramatically and it will either take more people or more time. The aim is that it is a loco built by Scarborough and District people for a local railway for the benefit of the general public at large. Let me know if you are coming to Scarborough at all and I will sort out the full 10 bob tour for you including a footplate ride or if you want to join in with the friends Group to build the engine, let me know. Same goes for anyone else interested in brining steam to the NBR. All the best David |

I'm really glad that you aren't intending to rebuild any of the existing Hudswell-Clarke engines ... tad concerned that your never-say-never might apply though
To liken the action to that of the BVR is to miss several very big points, one of which has been dealt with by DGH already, including the fact that it was the intention when Tracy-Jo was built that she would be able to become a true steamer at some point. If you want to see live-steam miniature Gresley locomotives go to the RHDR which has been running them for eighty years! Part of the joy of the NBR, PBR, Golden Acre and Butlins locos is that they aren't actually steam ... I can't really explain why that is because I love steam locos and their sounds/smells etc. As for the plan to build a NG steam loco ... sorry it doesn't tick any boxes for me at all ... there are a number of places where I can ride behind similar size NG engines but the places where I can ride behind large scale miniature locos are few and far between. Now if you were to suggest building a 20" Baltic along the lines of Robin Hood then I would happily sign-up to send my £10.00/month Nick PS Is my favourite loco back in service yet? I have been holding off on a visit so as to hopefully catch her in service. |

Nick You are right in what you say about Tracy-Jo as she had proper cylinders and a set of frames for a steam loco when built. At Cleethorpes we looked at getting our old Flying Scotsman now at Saltburn converted in to a steam loco and it was more or less a no starter as the frames where not right to do this. That is why we ended up with the set of frames that are standing in the workshop. |

I don't think you could really regauge a Wren down, if that's what you mean - it would probably be too big! The only locos I can think of that might be suitible for regaguing are: 1. The 18" gauge Curwen atlantic Crompton, which I suspect might be a bit underpowered, and 2. The Crewe/Horwich works shunters Pet and Wren, which the NRM would probably never agree to being modified! But since David Humphries knows the line better than anyone else on this forum, surely its probably best to go along with his suggestion? I agree with Nick, though, that I would not want to see any of the current locos converted, especially not Neptune and Triton. I have fond memories of those two from my childhood, and I wouldn't want to see them butchered into something they never were. As has been said, they are historic engines in their own right - converting them to steam power would be akin to converting the Romney pacifics into diesels! And in any case, though I'm not an expert engineer, the general proportions of the locos suggest to me that any conversion would be over-boilered and under-cylindered. A brand new engine is the only way to go! |

Crompton is currently in the Cleethorpes Queue, awaiting regaguing to 15" and restoration, it will be a while before this happens though I suspect! |

Would not pick an argument with that comment. Also, agree with Nick that they have their own individuality and at 75 years + are doing the job for which they were built. As diesels, they are an important part of the development of railway's and as I said before, Neptune is the oldest diesel hydraulic locomotive in the world. Robin Hood's wheels are still in Grimsby, but hopefully, member Johnt5293 will get the profiling complete in the next few weeks. When they get back, hopefully a weekend of putting them back in should see the engine out on the line for the summer. Will keep you updated on progress. David |

Today, Robin Hood ran its first day in service with the new tyres turned by John Tasker (Johnt5293) No problems encountered. Whilst she was in bits various other tasks have been completed such as new spring hanger links made. If any one wants to see her first hand, send me an e-mail as to when you are coming and I will make sure she is the rostered engine that day. David |
