History: There is a huge debate over whether the Raxan are truly evil or misunderstood. The history of the Raxan is not known for sure, however from the paleontological and archaeological digs allowed there, Psyclos scientists believe this is the best theory they have of Raxan history. The Raxan were once emotional beings with an interest in art and literature, and whose culture had reached a level on par with Elizabethan society when they were still in the stone age. This was possible because of their "hive mind", a psychic link between all Raxan that gave them abilities no singular Raxan could achieve, as well as unity. Each Raxan had their own castes, but they weren't war-oriented at all. The Soldier caste were once the Builders, the Fliers were once the Overseers, and the Queens were once the Peace-keepers. This all changed one day when a new strain of Raxan evolved. These Raxan were very different beings. They craved war and had a hive mind separate from the others. Their castes were not about peace, they were about war. The Raxan with emotions were known as Kai, and this new race was called the Raxan, their word for the "savage fighters". The peace-loving Kai were no match for the Raxan. Those that were not killed were enslaved. Once in power, the Raxan set to work building their new government. They progressed through the stages of industrialization, but with a major difference. The Raxan's interest in science were only for military application. The planet, once a paradise, became choked in smog. The only animals left were the scavengers and the livestock genetically bred to feed the maximum amount of citizens. One fateful day, the Raxan discovered the ability to travel faster than light. Almost immediately, they set to work exploring the cosmos. What they found was startling. They were not the only species with weaponry, in fact they were just one of many! That same day the supreme Raxan overlord issued a decree that they will conquer these peoples. The rest of the Milky Way were shocked when an unknown race of bugs had single-handedly invaded the planet of Telkazor. The Telkazor told of how many there were, of how they seemed to move as one, and most of all, how they never felt pity or remorse. The Federation had no choice but to declare war. What followed was a long, hard battle. The main obstacle of the Federation was how many there were. A well-known pundit had famously told of how the Raxan "Had a 100% draft rate. " This was not totally true, as most of the worker Raxan had stayed home to support the troops, but he was right in that the Raxan were totally committed to their cause. Despite their seeming total superiority, the Raxan were no match for the combined might of the Federation, and were defeated. A vastly unbalanced treaty following a forced surrender prohibited them from ever taking up arms or even researching weaponry. The Raxan had become the most oppressed race in the galaxy. Raxan hatred was almost universal. Many a citizen had protested the fact that the Federation allowed these "soulless beasts" to continue living. The way the citizens loathed the Raxan seemed to pale even in comparison to Hitler's hatred of the Jews or the typical Klan member's hatred of blacks. Most of all, it was totally fine, and it was all because the Raxan had no emotions. Now, the Raxan are making news again as the Rebellion has once more armed the Raxan, and they are ready to take what they believe is rightfully theirs. Castes: Each Raxan is part of one of many castes. Worker- The most basic Raxan. These are the smallest of the Raxan, about 4-5 feet tall. The workers look like humanoid insects, with three antennae on their heads, large compound eyes, and a tough exoskeleton. Their heads are antlike, with hard mandibles in place of a mouth and no visible nose or ears. Their bodies are like that of a cockroach standing upright. It is split in three sections, but are tough to discern. Their hands end in clawlike fingers that are quite dextrous. They have a tail ending in a sharp spike extending from the lower section of their bodies. Their body has black and orange markings with a metallic sheen. Their eyes are red. The worker's exoskeletons are the thinnest and most flexible, and their hands are more dextrous. Workers have the ability to shoot from their tails what can best be described as webbing. This is a very stiff material but is created far too slowly to be used as an effective weapon (particularly a projectile weapon). It is instead used for makeshift repairs, similar to how humans use duct tape. Soldier- The most common Raxan. They are large in comparison to other sentients, and quite powerful. Their exoskeletons are tough and their tails large and powerful. Other than that, they look like the workers. From their tails leaks a poisonous fluid that can weaken their foes' bodies. Scout- The only caste that can fly. The scouts have high senses and are very fast. They look like a sleeker version of the worker Assassin- The stealthiest of all classes. They have very sharp senses. They are all black, except for dim red eyes. They resemble the scouts otherwise. In fact, most classes look like slight variations on the others. Mentalist- The weakest Raxan physically, these act as telepathic relays between the queen and the rest of the colony. They have high psionic ability. The Mentalists appear to be neotenous forms of Raxan, although it is the size of a soldier. Occasionally, one will metamorphose, and become a silvery worker-like Raxan. Such instances must be forced artificially, and their brains actually become less developed as a result. Queen- The largest and strongest of all Raxan. They command the Raxan forces telepathically, and when accompanying their invasion forces (which they usually do), they usually stay well-protected. If you do manage to face one, though, watch out! These are the most powerful of all the sentient races of the galaxy. The queens are positively huge, about 15 feet tall or more and 25 feet long. They resemble praying mantises, with four legs and two long arms. Their hands have long, powerful claws. Their exoskeletons are lightweight, flexible, and tough. They have incredible power, and can easily bend titanium rods. Development: The Raxan are almost always the children of a queen. All Raxan have genders as well as the capability to have children, but do not unless ordered to by a queen. Queens lay an average on one egg a day, the key phrase being on average. The eggs develop for about 7 days. When they hatch, they are about two inches in length, white, and grub-like. They have tiny legs running all the way down their bodies. While they are delicate and vulnerable at first, they soon develop what appears to be metallic ribs running down the outside of their bodies. They grow rapidly, doubling in size every month for the first 6 months. They become fully mature in about a year. What caste they become depends mostly on genetics, similar in principle to whether an organism becomes a male or a female. What caste they will become is shown by an armored plate on the skulls of the Raxan child. The patterns on the plate show their caste and allow the Raxan to raise them accordingly. There is one exception: the queens. There is a small window of opportunity in Raxan development when their growth is monitored by worker Raxans specially chosen for the task of nursing. The largest and strongest in a certain amount of Raxan is fed a special compound equivalent to royal jelly in bees. How many are chosen depends on the needs of the Raxan colony at that time. When chosen and fed the compound, it activates a latent ability and the Raxan gets an even more voracious appetite. It grows rapidly as its body changes completely. The Raxan will eventually pupate when it is ready. Before pupation, the Raxan becomes increasingly ravenous, and creates a cocoon of webbing. In this state the Raxan is almost impervious to harm until about 3 days before metamorphosis is completed. When it emerges, it is now the caste it will be for the rest of its life. Raxan grow throughout life, though this is only apparent in very old Raxan as well as queens, which grow faster than the other clans. The rate at which a Raxan grows is proportional to how powerful it already is as well as the current food supply at the time. During Raxan famines, it is quite common for the growth of many Raxan workers to actually become stunted, only to resume when food becomes more plentiful. Hybrids: Though only those with the strangest of fetishes choose to willingly breed with a Raxan, hybrids occur nonetheless. The most common scenario is for a Kai slave will be chosen to breed with a queen. Naturally, the Kai will resist, but be overpowered. The result of the union is a hybrid in the truest sense of the word. The hybrid's coloration is dark orange and red, a combination of their two color combinations. They are raised as if they were pure Raxan, and end up having personality problems. What little emotion they have is nearly entirely destroyed in their upbringing The Raxan not only have no emotions but have no concept of emotions. Kai and other sentients are simply perceived as lacking in logic and prone to erratic behavior. As a result, the Raxan disapprove of emotions and suppress it as best they can. Hybrids are almost never chosen as queens. There are exceptions, however. Recently, however, the Raxan's attitudes towards emotions have changed. They believe they have come to "understand" emotions, and believe they can take advantage of them. Now, hybrids are encouraged to channel their emotions, and equate them with power. However, the Raxan still do not fully understand them, and the only emotion valued is anger, which they refer to as the "Drak". It is possible, though unlikely, for other sentient races to interbreed with Raxan. The result seems to be a toss-up between a stoic humanoid with increased size and strength and a Raxan with traits of the non-Raxan parent. Many of these hybrids become "rogue" Raxan, disconnecting themselves from the hive mind forever to forge their own destinies. Naming: The Raxan once named people based on numbers, however this eventually wasted time when the numbers became very large. They then used combinations of letters and numbers but were similarly long. After the first war, they adopted the naming system of a first name and a last name. Most Raxan names are chosen at random. Kai slaves usually create the names that are used. For some castes like the soldiers and workers, they may have numbers in addition to their name. Every single name is unique to the Raxan, however when a Raxan dies the name is reassigned. In effect, the names are similar to the social security numbers of 21st century Earth. Names are much more sophisticated than numbers because although the Raxan have 10 numerical symbols (0-9), their system of writing has 30 letters. Therefore, names can be much shorter and have greater combinations, and the only catch is to have vowels in certain places. |
