Many years ago, the sentient species of the Milky Way were nearly wiped out by a foe known as the Raxan. This species was terrible and cruel, its overriding hive mind directing it towards one purpose: conquest of all. The Raxan were a race of beings with no kindness or compassion, as well as being incapable of feeling any kind of emotion at all. The Raxan were beaten back, however, and under threat of annihilation the Raxan agreed to never again take up arms, and were monitored closely to make sure they would honor their word.

For over five hundred years, the Milky Way Galaxy enjoyed relative peace and prosperity under the Federation of Planets. The galaxy was seemingly on its way towards Utopia, a new golden age of cooperation between races.

However, that would not last.

The Federation became bloated and corrupt. They mishandled many catastrophes, wronging several species that were considered to be minor in the galactic stage. Their mangled policies and crippling red tape led towards a violent uprising by a group known as the Rebellion. EIn addition, the Raxan seemed to be with them. The Rebellion "liberated" the surrounding planets and it appears that they had established an alliance with the Raxan. With the ultimate warrior race on their side, the Rebellion is a threat the Federation can no longer ignore. The galaxy is tearing apart at the seams. Will you fight for peace and stability or do you sympathize with the Rebellion's cause?

Serkane and Ezkuro stepped out of the ship, onto the surface of Xervis, capital of Psyclo. Serkane turned towards Tetroneaque, signaling him to come on. He was starting to become immensely curious about him. "So... um, Tetroneaque, right? Where exactly did you come from, anyway? I don't recall ever learning about your species. Did you guys just arrive on the galactic scene? If your race was so advanced, then why haven't I heard about it? " Ezkuro was looking around. "I had no idea that they made buildings this big. " "Yeah. I've been here before, but it's still incredible to behold. That building in the distance is the space elevator. If you can stand listening to elevator music for 3 hours, it's the most convenient way to get into space. As I was saying, Tetroneaque, why haven't I heard of your species before? I'd quite like to meet the rest of your people sometime. " "I wonder if there are any hot chicks around? " "Ezkuro, the city has a population of 75 million. Chances are, one of them has to be beautiful enough for your tastes. Now quit interrupting me and let our guest speak! " "Fine..."

Tetroneaque stepped out of the ship and followed closely behind Serkane. He didn't want to admit it but he found Ezkuro rather intimidating. He looked around a bit before speaking, the city looked rather interesting.

"Well, I'm not exactly from this galaxy. I was experimenting in my lab when I got a tiny bit carried away and sort of overloaded my matter transporter. It sent me, along with a chunk of my lab to this galaxy. I'm from Vulpes Prime, homeworld of the Kitsune Empire." He said explaining a little.

"Do I need to tell the whole story now? I have a feeling your government will want the whole story from me and I dislike repeating myself, especially when the story is so long!" He said with a little nervous chuckle, starting to loosen up a little after their escape from the Raxan.

Serkane nodded. "Very well then. I suppose it's best to warn you that the Psyclo have been the most powerful race military-wise. I don't think they'll react well to the status quo being challenged. Still, I doubt they'll put you in prison or anything, so no matter what happens it'll be a step up. " Serkane was only half joking. There was a reason the Psyclo were sterotyped as arrogant. Centuries of dominance had made them prideful, and now that there was the possibility of a new race more powerful and possibly more intelligent, well that wasn't going to be easy to swallow. Ezkuro was still looking around. "Hey, I know that building! Is that our destination?" Ezkuro asked, pointing to a white, tower-like structure. "Yeah. " They walked on, the stares of the populace not fazing him.

Several guards were at the door. "Hello. I believe we have an appointment. This is Tetroneaque. " he said, motioning to his companion. The guard inspected a small mechanical notepad. "Oh, yes, here we are. " "Can we come too?" asked an overly eager Ezkuro. "You may. I expect lord Xynto will want to hear your side of the story as well. " "Awesome!" Serkane rolled his eyes. "Yes, I would also like to accompany Tetroneaque. " "Very well then. " He punched something into his device. "Xynto has been notified of your arrival. You may go inside. " said the guard "Thank you. " replied Serkane, bowing slightly in respect. He broadcast a telepathic message to Ezkuro, so as not to embarrass him. Ezkuro, this is a formal occasion, so I'd rather you try to act more dignified, okay? Try not to embarrass yourself in front of one of the galaxy's most powerful people.

Tetroneaque simply followed Serkane, like a timid child. The whole place was a bit unsettling and the curious stares from practically everyone they passed wasn't helping manners. Never had he felt so alone, even when he had been isolated inside his lab miles from civilization. His mental wards were in place, keeping anyone from communicating telepathically with him or monitoring his thoughts. It was more of a reflexive action when he became uncomfortable than anything else.

What Serkane had to say on the matter only increased the little scientist's nervousness.

Oh great. I don't even know these guys and they've already a reason to hate me.

His three tails curled around him as he went into the building, showing just how nervous he was. He hoped they'd simply let him go to do his own thing. He really didn't want to get involved with this war if he could help it, but knew that both sides wanted him for his expertise in making weapons.

Xynto was inside the building, seated in an almost throne-like chair wearing a large purple robe. Serkane contained the urge to roll his eyes at the sheer amount of pompousness that the Psyclo was displaying. The man himself, however, had a warmer expression than expected and Serkane realized that no matter what his feelings were, Xynto would probably have been expected to appear in public like this. Apparently, even the Psyclo preferred to elect leaders that weren't completely boring, hence the slight smile being conveyed by the man. It felt a little bit forced, but it was still a good sign... "Sit down, please. " Serkane and Ezkuro did so. "So, this is the man I've been hearing so much about. Very peculiar specimen, indeed. I've also heard of your... talents, sir. I would very much like for you to work for us for the time being. I'm not going to force you to do anything, however you must realize the dire situation we're in. Perhaps, first and foremost, you could tell me about yourself. Our Psyclo scouts, who have been searching the galaxy for centuries in search of sentient life, have never encountered a people like your own. Would you care to explain why your presence has only become known so recently?"

Tetroneaque

Tetroneaque was bit overwhelmed by the whole situation. The being in front of him looked like some sort of alien emperor or something out of one of those science fiction movies. It still wasn't as unnerving as the Raxan Queen whom had threatened to bathe in his blood though.

"Well, sir..." Tetroneaque began, unsure of how to address the being.

"My full name is Tetroneaque Swiftpaw Tailchaser. My home planet is Vulpes Prime, home planet of the Kitsune Empire. I'm afraid you've never encountered us due to our worlds being in an entirely different galaxy." Tetroneaque began, simply telling the truth. It hadn't even occurred to attempt to lie to this fellow.

"I was ordered to construct a device capable of sending matter over great distances instantaneously. I called it the Matter Transporter and I did manage to create one successfully. I was testing it out, and the first test I managed to send a robotic drone clear across the planet. However on my second test I got just a smidgen carried away and siphoned off the energy from the nearest power plant in an attempt to send a drone to one our outlying colonies on Vulpes Nine. I must have miscalculated a bit though as the energy I used managed to overload the Matter Transporter and send myself, my drone, and a large chunk of my lab to this galaxy. I landed on the Planet Falke and encountered one of the natives there." Tetroneaque kept telling his story, not skipping over anything it seemed.

"The whole disturbance woke another native lifeform that they referred to as an Earthshaker. I panicked and opened fire on the Earthshaker with what remained of my lab's defense systems and reduced the beast to a smoldering crater. I didn't know they were endangered species..." He said, looking down and hoping he wouldn't be punished for that little act.

"Anyway, with nothing left but emergency power to keep the security system running for my lab I set out from it. That Falken who stumbled upon my lab showed me to the nearest city. It was there that I ran into another Falken, who kidnapped me as I was going to meet the local officials to offer my services as a scientist and inventor. I didn't know it at the time and simply thought him a helpful individual, right up till he drugged me and I woke up in a Raxan prison." Tetroneaque took a few deep breathes to steady himself. His mouth felt a little dry now as well and he wished he had something to drink.

"I attempted to engineer an escape of my own once I realized I had been captured. I did manage to escape my first cell and take out a few Raxan with my fusion cutter. I think they assumed it was a pen or something. Anyway, it ran out of energy when I was confronted by their Queen." Tetroneaque was visibly shaking now remembering the Raxan Queen. He had never been so scared in his life as he had when he saw that monstrous creature.

"I admit that she frightened me so badly I simply gave up right there as I no longer had any weapon to fight back. It was also at this point that I realized I had no way off the planet and have no experience with flying any of this galaxy's spacecraft. In fact I still can't read anything from this galaxy as my translator," he pointed at the almost invisible device on his ear, "only translates sounds so that I can speak with all of you and vice versa."

"The Queen wanted me to start work on a weapons manufactory capable of creating some heavy infantry weaponry. I did start working on one that would have been capable of creating a projectile weapon I call the 'Spread needler' as well as ammo for said weaponry. I was about three days away from completing the device when Serkane came to my rescue. As we escaped I managed to set the device to overload, it was running on a dark matter reactor so there is no chance anything survived the explosion's radius. So you won't have to worry about them creating another, and I didn't leave any written notes for them either. In fact the only thing they might have is a list of incomplete supplies written in my own language. Well, anyway we managed to escape the Raxan prison with my last surviving drone holding the line to buy us some time. He took out about forty or fifty soldiers before they managed to take down my assistant, and his death explosion took out a few more there at the end. I was surprised at how well he worked, as he wasn't even designed as a front line fighter but as mere security for my lab." Tetroneaque seemed a bit out of breath at this point.

"Can I have something to drink please?" He asked.

Serkane, Ezkuro, and Xynto listened intently to the whole story. Xynto was first to speak up. "Erm..." he struggled to remember Serkane's name only to realize he didn't know it in the first place. "Falken, can you confirm his side of the story? " "For future reference, my name is Serkane, but yes, I can confirm at least some of it is true. " "Very well then, Serkane. Well, killing an Earthshaker is only an offense if it does not pose an immediate threat, but we have more important issues to discuss. " "Um, excuse me, but what about his drink?" asked Ezkuro innocently. Xynto made an expression as if he was about to slap himself on the forehead. "So sorry. Your body can metabolize water, right? " "From my observations, he does appear to be carbon-based, yes. " said Serkane. "Very well then. " he turned to a hired servant. "Bring my guest a glass of water, will you? " "Very well, sir. Anything else?" "That will be all. "

Xynto pondered for a little while before speaking. "Our current FTL travel is incapable of traveling beyond our own galaxy, but I do believe that some Psyclo scientists were working on a matter transporter a while back. I think the project was discontinued due to concerns that it wasn't practical. I'll make a deal with you. I would very much like for you to work for us for the time being. In exchange you will be given suitable quarters and a large paycheck -I could give you some numbers but they will probably be meaningless-. However, I would also like to know if you have any... special requests. " "Say, Tetroneaque, can you get in contact with any of your people? Or are you basically stuck here?" asked Serkane. "That is a good point. If you are unable to return, we may be able to assist you in that regard as well. "

Tetroneaque was glad to get the glass of water, and downed it in one gulp. He felt a bit refreshed from it and better able to talk.

"That is a good question. As far as I know I don't have any way of getting back. I don't have my planet's coordinates in relation to this galaxy, or any land marks to speak of that would give direction. While theoretically possible to establish communication with my homeworld I don't think its plausible." He said being quite blunt. He let out a sigh, as he really hadn't had time to think about it since he arrived in this galaxy.

"I suppose we could trace the energy signature of my destroyed matter transporter and perhaps find a match somewhere out there, but the odds are not exactly good." He decided that was enough on that subject for now, he'd only depress himself if he kept thinking about. Best to make the most of the situation now.

"As for your offer. I accept. I'll gladly do anything that might help rid this galaxy of those oppressive Raxan creatures. My specialty back home was in weapons research and development as well as countermeasures. I also dabbled in transportation technology as well... though that obviously wasn't my forte." He said with a little laugh.

"As for special arrangements, I can't think of anything currently." He said, not really able to think up anything. Plus he didn't want to seem ungrateful for everything these people had done for him. They'd freed him from that prison and were offering him pretty much the same as his old government, a fat paycheck and the resources he'd need to create his inventions.

Xynto nodded. "I suppose that's so. A warp signature might be hard to find, though... " Serkane thought a moment. "I think I had read a science fiction novel where the protagonists gets stuck on an alien world, and they use photos of the stars back home to find Earth. Is that feasible in the real world?" "In theory, I suppose so. Even a few constellations may help. However, to try and find star patterns for each possible point in the galaxy in search of a match, accounting for atmospheric variations, isn't very feasible. Still, it'd be a start. We may be able to at the very least reduce the number of stars we'd be looking at. Still, it'd require some of our most advanced computers. "

Ezkuro stood in his chair. "Why are you being so helpful anyway? I'm no expert, but this ought to be expensive. I wasn't born yesterday; You want something out of this, don't you?" "Ezkuro!" interjected Serkane. "No, his skepticism is not unwarranted. Altruism has its limits; the Psyclo board of science is unlikely to want to help a complete stranger this badly. We have... other reasons for wanting to contact Tetroneaque's people. " "I knew it!" yelled Ezkuro. "Relax, I was merely wanting to establish friendly trade relations. Don't be so surprised that I may have hidden motives. This is politics: everyone's ultimately in it for their own gain. " "That's a... rather pessimistic way of putting it. " remarked Serkane. "Don't get me wrong, I want to help Tetroneaque, but if I'm going to go to such lengths, I'll need a reason to convince everyone else. Tetroneaque, is there anything else you can give us to help us locate your world? What about your people, they might send a search party eventually if they know your destination. "

"My people probably think I blew myself up." Tetroneaque said as his ears drooped a little. It was most likely true, as that was one of the main reasons his little lab had been so secluded to begin with. They may not ever be aware he was gone yet as the next shipment to his lab wasn't scheduled for another two days. Wouldn't they be surprised when they came across the remains of his building.

"The parts of my lab that came with me were still somewhat functional. If we simply got some more power to it we could access my main computer. If you really wanted to you could bring the whole thing here!" He said, wondering how expensive it would be to bring most of a building through space to this planet.

"Assuming that those Earthshakers haven't destroyed it yet that is." It was probably the best place to start for any information, plus it would be a boon to anyone's research that got those files.

Serkane nodded. "Very well then. I doubt the lab was destroyed by Earthshakers. They're very territorial and they don't move around much anyway, so they wouldn't have much motivation to move into another Earthshaker's territory. " Ezkuro was feeling intensely curious. "Why do you even tolerate those things on your home planet? Why don't you just kill them all if they're so dangerous?" "Ezkuro, you know how prey species reproduce quickly and have so many children?" "Like the Smeerp or Telkazor Lillion?" "Exactly. Now, how do you suppose the species of Falke would adapt to the ultimate predator, one that eats all biomass in the surrounding area?"

Ezkuro thought a bit. "They'd have a lot of babies?" "Bingo. And what do you suppose would happen if the Earthshakers disappeared?" Ezkuro thought for a moment, and suddenly he realized. "Oh, I get it..." "Exactly. There would be a population explosion that would cover the globe, followed by the biosphere becoming sterile without the competition that the Earthshakers gave. Without a significantly powerful predator, natural selection would grind to a halt. Say goodbye to diversity. Even the Valker, the giant birds birds of prey that hunt in packs like wolves, wouldn't be able enough. So, while we don't like the Earthshakers, we would much rather adapt to the Earthshaker threat to limit casualties on both sides rather than destroy the one thing keeping the population in balance. " "I see then. " Xynto spoke up. "As much as I enjoyed that lecture on ecological niches, we still need to find the lab. Serkane, Ezkuro, you will accompany Tetroneaque to Falke. Find that lab and transmit as much data as possible to my computer. My PDM number is 111-1111-1111. " "That's a simple number to memorize. " "I'm the leader of the most powerful species in the galaxy. I can have whatever number I want. Besides, I can't afford to have someone have something to tell me but forgot my number. " "True. Well, Tetroneaque, do you want to leave right now or would you like to talk a bit longer?"

"Well, I'd..." He began but was interrupted by his own stomach as it gave a monstrous rumble that even a Earthshaker would be proud to call it's own. Tetroneaque fell down, landing on his bottom as he suddenly felt faint. His metabolism was still going full force, but he hadn't eaten nearly enough lately.

"I'm sorry, can I get something to eat please? I feel light headed..." He said, not standing back up. He hated looking so weak in front of his new allies but he couldn't help it. He needed to eat at least three times his own weight each day to keep his energy up, and he hadn't eaten at all today.

Xynto nodded. "You should have said so before. I'll get a servant to get you some food. . " He calls for someone to get Tetroneaque some food quickly,, who responds immediately. "It may take him a bit. Serkane dug in his pocket and pulled out what looked like an energy bar. "Here, eat this in the meantime. My species has a bit of a high metabolism, so I carry it around just in case. " "That's... awfully convenient..." observes Ezkuro. "I'm always prepared. Speaking of which, weren't you injured?" "I can manage. We didn't walk very far, anyway. Besides, I used your first aid kit on board. " "I still think you should get medical attention. " "After this. I have a high pain threshold, and the armor meant I only had minor wounds. " "You were limping. " "Only slightly. " "If you say so, we'll move on. " Xynto raised an eyebrow, or the Psyclo equivalent anyway. "Well, this meeting shouldn't last too much longer. I"ve got most of the information I need, anyway.. " A servant arrived, carrying a plate of bread and some exotic fruits. "Thank you. " said Xynto. "I hope you've enjoyed your stay. I know some of my brethren can be rather... cold to outsiders. "

Tetroneaque swallowed the energy bar in one gulp, not even tasting it. He simply needed something in his belly! He listened to the chatter a bit until the platter of bread and fruits arrived. He didn't recognize any of the fruits but they all smelled good to him. He went to town on the food right there, wolfing it down with gusto. Surprisingly, despite his voracious appetite he didn't really get any juice or crumbs on himself. Everything found it's way into his stomach.

"Thank you." Tetroneaque said as he got back to his feet, his lightheaded feeling passing. His stomach continued to growl though, as his appetite was not yet satiated.

"Excuse me, but is there someplace I can get a full and proper meal?" He asked as his ears perked forward and he smiled. The whole effect made him look downright adorable.

All three of the others had a quizzical expression as Tetroneaque, having already wolfed down what would count as a meal for some people, asked where he could get a meal. Where does that food go anyway? thought Serkane. At least I have an excuse to eat that much... I don't see any wings on him and I'm fairly sure he doesn't have a sophisticated flight bladder system inside. Nonetheless, he capitulated. "Well, this area of town is mostly historic or government buildings, but it shouldn't take too long to get to the nearest restaurant. "
