This is a problem close to my heart, and from what I can see the media are very much on the side of the Palistinians. I have studied this area in university and now will give an account of whats happening if anyone can be bothered reading.

The history:

4000BC (approx) - Jews settle in the region of Israel, booting out the resident Caananites

200AD - Romans kick out the Jews after they rebelled against their rule. The Jews are scattered accross the world

After - Once the Romans leave, the Turkish Empire claims the lands as part of their massive Arab state which covers most of the middle east by this time

WW1 - The Turkish Empire collapses, and Britain promises Israel to Jews accross the world. The rest of the middle east, the Arabs could keep

WW2 - Jews finally return to Israel, at this point the state was far larger than it is today

post WW2 - Surrounding Arab countries continually invaded Israel and the state gave up a lot of its land in an attempt of appeasment to the Arabs.

Today - Even more of Israel has been given to Palistinians, who are still not happy. Their government, Hamas, vows to destroy Israel and the Jewish population that resides in it.

And there you have it.

That's odd, this didn't appear as a new post on my computer...

Anyways, yeah, that timeline looks about right. However, I thought that Isreal actually gained land from those recent wars (Golan Heights, for example). Also, you can see why the Palestinians are angry - a lot of their ancestors had to move to new lands after the state of Isreal was created.

It's still incredible how unstable the region has always been though.

PS: You're missing the crusades from your time line.

whoever said that? im a firm agnostic me B)

no, religion IN MY OPINION causes more problems than it solves... and this is one of the bigger problems.

but it isnt one sided as the first post seems to make out...

the land belongs to both, they are in a state of war...
there is noone with any true claim to that area over the others

cor, if the fools who invented the idea of farming had ever thought that things like this would become of it

EDIT BY ERIATARKA1: Please don't state such nonsense as fact.....I know that sounds a bit asserting-belief-as-fact itself, but IN MY OPINION (backed up by evidence) The Crusades etc. were in fact POLITICAL, hijacked by MEDIA as being RELIGIOUS.

I'd have to disagree with plqx on the first of his points, but we've had this argument elsewhere, so I won't have it agian here.

Regarding Israel, I think the Western countries were very irresponsible in the way they handled the situation. The Jews, as shown in the timeline, had been out of Israel for hundreds of years, and to just allow them to move back in, without providing for the Palestinians, was not a particularly wise move.
