Smoking bill

If passed this bill will make it illegal for anyone to smoke at all. Even in their own home. Anyone seen smoking can be aressted there an then with a maximum sentance of 12 months in jail. However before it is put into action, there will be a "quitting period"(thanks to AE for idea) in which somkers will have four months to quit and tobacconists can sell their stock.

These are some main points of what it will do:

1. Improve public health
2. Help conserve the enviroment
3. Stop so many people being ridiculously ugly

Also I point out that it requires no funding.

I think that I'll have to oppose this. It would create a black market in tobacco, which would bring in the undesirable world of organised crime, drug dealing etc.

Anyways, I can't allow the bill to pass like this. While it may not need any direct funding, several acts of parliament rely on Tobacco duty for funding. You need to state where the money will come from instead.

I'd support it. Just swtich the Tobacco duty in other bills to alcohol taxation. Smoking is a seriosly bad thing in my opinion.

However, I propose a "period of transition". This is for companies to sell all of their tobacco products and/or for consumers to quit smoking. In the meantime we bolster campains to cause people to quit. Anyone or company that does not comply with the quitting programs could end up being fined a large amount of money. Once the period finishes the possesion/use of cigarettes and other tobacco based products will be made completely illegal.

*agrees wth AE* You can't just say STOP SMOKING and expect people to do it immediately. It's an addiction and is hard to quit. People need time, and I suggest three months.

I agree with this in principle, but it would be very hard to implement successfully, as the black market would grow enormously, due to so many people already being addicted.

Move it to alcohol taxation? From one evil to another...

Again, a matter of choice: if people want to die early, leave them be.

Better to, again, cut poisons etc. in cigarettes.

I think I will take you up on that suggestion. :D

As the opposition it's my job to make the governments job harder. ^_^

I don't mind people wanting to die early. I just don't want them to make other people who DON'T want to die early die early too. If you get my meaning.

Yes, I understand...do a Scottish thing and ban it in public places other than for artistic purposes (something they didn't add but should have done).

i would agree to an extent, but i counter with, Smoking should only be allowed in homes, and establishments should have the option to ban on their premisis, should their right to veto smoking on their property be infinged then that should carry a fixed penalty. Under no circumstances should smoking be permitted in streets, towns or exterior land owned by the state.
