The distribution of plastic bags, which usually end up as non-biodegradable waste, is to be prohibited by stores. They will be asked to encourage their customers to use paper bags or reusuable methods of carrying their products which they have bought, such as cardboard boxes or those weird bags you occasionally see for sale in the CO-OP. Stores will be allowed to distribute any plastic bags they currently have in stock, but will be forced to cease production of further ones.

why cant we just put in what they have in parts of ireland - there is a 2p tax on plastic bags...

in those places the average plastic bag/person is less than one tenth that in england...

Which is not only not useful for customers but is positively detrimental to the public.

WHILE I AGREE that something has to be done, this is NOT it.

Especially the switch to paper bags - we don't have enough paper to do that, they're not as good as plastic bags and don't improve the environment well enough for the change to be viable.

No from me!
