Well I don't know if you heard on the news today, but Parliament has voted to upgrade the UK's arsenal (I know, they suck :P. But seriously) of Trident nuclear missile carrying submarines. This plan is expected to cost around £20b.

I for one, am appaled. Seriously, £20b is the greater than the debt of most African countries! And we're spending it on nuclear missiles, which we can't even use! We are going to spend £20b on things capable of wiping out the eintire human race! If these things are to be used, it will be the end of the world...

Hmmm... I believe we still need some sort of a deterrent, and the government has said it intends to reduce the size of the weapons stockpile. Yes, nukes are bad, and I hope that they are never used again. But you have to remember - our nuclear deterrent is one of the main reasons why there hasn't been a conventional attack on the mainland of the UK since World War 2.

This came up in a debate.

1) It gives us prestige
2) It'll take 20 years - what if at some point in the future we realise that a war will kick off in 5 years? - we won't have the time
3) Er, that's it...

I'm not pro, I'd say I was pacifistic, but I DO see where people are coming from.
In general, if it's in the Defence (read War) budget, then it should at least be spent on proper equipment for troops.

what exactly are we defending against? This "phantom" of islamic terrorists conspiring our doom? lol I think the media has a lot to do with this irrational fear, I mean sure, the London bombing killed 50 people, the IRA killed a lot more. the population seems to have developed this whole "myth" as I like to call it, surrounding the "Islamic menace"

Its interesting how religion can define a national identity, why back in the 16th century by being Catholic alienated you from the rest of the society.

Funny how things dont change.....

Actually, I think the deterrent's supposed to be for a future cold war, with the US vs China...

And Boo, although the IRA did kill a lot more, most attacks were preceeded with warnings, and there was nothing near the scale of 7/7. Also, when you consider the amount of people who died in 9/11, I think a fear that it could happen again, possibly on british soil, is reasonably justified. Although I agree, nukes won't be much good against islamic terrorists.

They're practically a super power already - they have a lot of influence, and some African countries are turning to China for support, believing that it'll benefit them more than if they turned to America.

An interesting point: Most terrorists are from developing countries. Except India. India with its one billion population harbor no ill feeling toward the "west" bless their souls ^_^

I hate nukes, they could destroy alot of england if we were hit b one!, there stupid because we'd kill bazillions of inoccent people, who had no fault in a war staring, we're far better of with smaller missliles, to destroy enemy millatry buildings, and try to assanate the leaders of the country, (this could be hard I have no idea hos hard assanating a leaing figure is?)
