Autumn Election 2007?

It's looking increasingly likely that Gordon Brown is about to call a general election: Labour Ministers have been suggesting that it could be called within weeks, The Electoral Commission has been hurridly making sure that the country is ready for an election, and after a meeting with Gordon Brown, the leaders of Unite, Britain's largest trade union, have told their members to prepare for an election.

So do you think there'll be an election this autumn? And who do you think will win?

I can't say. I don't WANT there to be an election. If there is one in 2009/10 then I'll be able to vote, but I can't yet :(...

I think that Gordon will have to call an election now - he's let the speculation go on for so long, that if he backs down he'll be branded as cowardly and indecisive.

Unfortunately I think that Labour will win an autumn election - however, I think they'll lose a considerable number of seats, and that although they might stay in government, they might end up with a single figure majority, or maybe no majority at all.

I think the real casulties of an election will be the Lib Dems though - the nature of first past the post means that their share of the vote only needs to fall slightly for them to lose a lote of seats... and support for the Lib Dems is nowhere near the levels they had in 2005.

I think on recent opinion polls, and because of the changed boundaries of constituencies, Labour are expected to increase their number of seats.

the changed boundaries of constituencies

It truly is a fantastic policy, isn't it?

That must be the only thing they do, analyse who voted what and move the constituency boundaries around a little bit to maximise their number of seats.

It's very clever, and the real reason hopeless parties stay in power while decent ones stay out.....

Well, maybe.

*cough*tories in wokingham district council*cough*

they lose 9% of the vote, from 49% to 40%. lib dems go from 32 to 41%. tories gain 6 seats, lib dems lose 5... how does that work? they moved all the constituency boundaries so they bear no reflection on political views or lifestyles...

Apparently Binfield is somehow moving to Windsor, despite being the opposite side of Bracknell from it.

I think Labour will win by a large amount (again).

Brown seems to be doing a fair job so far.

Yeah.

Browns "Make opponents waste time preparing for an election which may or may not come instead of coming up with decent opposing policies" Plan is a work of genius.

:D

You're right - the Tories don't have a hope of winning in 2007 - bring on 2010!

Actually, the most significant thing about this decision is probably that the Liberal Democrats have been saved from complete and utter destruction. Based upon current opinion polls, they'd be set to lose half their seats in parliament, which could easily send the party back to the dark days of the Liberal party, when they barely had enough MPs to fit in a taxi.

By 2010, the Lib Dems will have replaced Ming (probably with Nick Clegg - keep an eye on him) and will be able to benefit as the left vote deserts Labour (simply the fact that they've been in power so long will doom the Labour Party), and so they should at least be able to maintain their number of seats, if not expand on them.
