About half an hour ago, sir Menzies "Ming" Campell announced his resignation as leader of the liberal democrats.

:o NO! I liked him, he seemed like a nice guy as well. Maybe they can get someone in to turn around the party by 2009 though at least.

And a source...

Poor ming... :(

It would be hilarious if the Lib Dem opinion polls fall even lower now.

To stand out as a third party the Lib Dems need a strong personality at the helm and some clear and different policies.

Ming wasnt the guy for that...

(in response to cc0's post)
they could well do in the short term... but hopefully a new leader will come along with the ability to raise them back up again... without attempting to rewrite every one of the party's policies like cameron had to do... and blair before him to a lesser extent.

*cough*NickClegg*endcough*

That said, it would be hard to rewrite the Lib Dems policies in the same way as Blair and Cameron - you can't make policies more centrist if they're already in the center.

Hm, there could be a possibility of Charles Kennedy standing for re-election as the parties leader. I think he should stand at the very least, dunno whether he'd get in or not though...

Charles Kennedy was a great party leader who fell victim to the bullying tactics of some of the worse parts of the press...

however... best not to be biased - some of the others could be better than him

He's already stated it's highly unlikely he'll run.
