The government is facing public outcry tonight after it introduced reforms that greatly reduced the level of financial support for university students. Under the old system, gifted students from poorer backgrounds were entitled to free university education, but the government has no scrapped this. More significantly, the government is now refusing to subsidise university education for students' first semesters, which will force many applicants from low-income families to take out loans from high street banks or even give up on the idea of further education altogether. A government spokesman defended the plans, stating that it was necessary to control spending levels so that stable government can be maintained. In other news, tensions continued to rise on the international scene today as Aspar ignored Nellapaland's demand for it to withdraw its armed forces. Nellalapaland has now said that unless it recieves a response from Aspar by 7pm tomorrow, stating that it is prepared at once to withdraw its forces from Nellapaland, the Nellapalese forces will remove the Asparian army by force. It is not known whether a diplomatic solution is still being sought by either side. |
