A group of angry farmers have blockaded all the main routes in and and out of the town of Docester, Nashun. They have formed barricades along the roads outside the town, and are refusing to allow traffic past. Police havenot moved against the barricades as they fear that they would be overwhelmed and full scale violence would break out. The barricades are in protest against the Gellish Trade Treaty, which forced Ostentian farmers to compete with Gellish farmers on the same terms in the home market. Although the protests have no clear leadership yet, several farmers have vowed not to go home until the government scraps the treaty. |

How do you pronounce Docester anyway? Do-sess-ter? Do-ches-ter? Do-ster (as in Gloucester)?... |

You should really be asking me as I came up with it. ANYWAY, I did actually think of it as "Do-sess-ter" when I created it, but as you've guessed, the name actually came from Gloucester. TBH, I think it can be either. I've heard Gloucester pronounced with 3 syllables before, though Do-ster sounds a bit like "Toaster" to me... |

I call it Dor-sess-ter - but that's just my thick Oredian accent.

Not every situation can be resolved by tank-based violence. Some day you'll learn that :P... |

Yep, I'm the MP for Aurora Plateau, a pleasant suburban constituency in the east of the city.

The Oredian accent is notable for its "smoothed" words. Take Docester. The standard pronunciation is Do-sess-ter, but the Oredian pronunciation is Dor-sess-ter. The "r" sound in the third syllable is mimicked in the first syllable, creating a larger sense of consistency and a smoother overall pronunciation. In some cases, syllables are ommitted altogether. The difference is particularly noticable in the pronunciation of Ostentia: Oredian pronunciation: Oss-stench-ah Boondoxian pronunciation: Oh-stent-ee-a This large difference in the pronunciation of the peninsula's name is believed to have caused several wars between Oredia and Boondoxia in medieval times. |

That's odd. Being Valaxian I say Oss-ten-shee-ah, or Oss-ten-sha... |

Same, and I'm Boondoxian. Sheepling is the -tee-ah one. I reckon you got Boondoxia mixed up with Nashun, which is obviously Sheepling's homeland. Oddly though, I've always considered Oredia to be oriental. This is reflected in the naming I gave it. |

@Cieran: As you should know, Valaxia is a melting pot of different cultures, so many accent variations are likely to be found there. @Miniyoda008: That's the most common pronunciation - it's basicly a mixture of the two extremes. @Inevitable: No, the people of Boondoxia do pronounce it Oh-stent-ee-a. The fact that you're using the common pronunciation is probably a result of you spending so much time in the capital. Also, Sheepling's prounciation is more along the lines of "Or-stench-ee-a", which has more in common with the accent of Nashun. As for the oriental thing, I toned it down a little (along with the rest of the themes) because although they were seperate countries, they were neighbours so there would have been at least some similarities between them. Still, oriental architecture is common throughout Oredia. |
