Because it was a manifesto commitment of the ODP, which has been given a mandate from the people to carry out its manifesto commitments.

Also, because our country was so recently divided, it makes sense to put an emphasis on celebrating our unity. That is not to say that we should engage in mindless patriotism, but simply that we should set aside one day a year in which people are encouraged to celebrate the very existance of our country.
